I think maybe she's talking about indentured servants. My irish ancestors were indentured servants which is kind of like slavery, since they really never worked their way out of the debt and many of the women were raped and abused. They were "sold" and had masters until their debt was paid but they weren't exactly slaves because they were white and weren't hated for being white.
I wonder if it's like this between the jews and germans over in Europe.
