Interesting article... good writing... I don't particularly agree with it...

Most people in this thread are talking about violent porn as if it encompassed all porn. It doesn't. Violent porn is degrading because it is violent, not because it is porn. If you want to condemn something, be specific on what you are condemning, otherwise you risk making a straw man argument.

I am not convinced that porn, even violent porn, is about male power. The female pornstar is getting paid. The guy on the other end is trying to avoid making a mess on the keyboard while he pines for a cheap image of something he will never get his hands on. And he has the power how, again?

I think a lot of the dominance in porn is actually designed to compensate for general male feelings of powerlessness in our culture. Male bashing is called humor while female-bashing is called misogyny. Sexism has become defined as "discrimination against women." Supposedly there is no such thing as sexism against men, because they have "all the power, due to [insert fashionable gender feminist myth here]." Being male is often presented as a crime men should be ashamed of. Guilty by ownership of penis. Get in line, or your penis license will be revoked. It is no surprise that men wanting to hit back is manifesting itself in the violent porn subculture. This is not a good thing, but it is not a suprise to me. I pretty much agree with spike here.

The hyper-masculine porn star is not a symbol of the dominance of American males. It is an indication of the submissiveness that is being forced on them. The mainstream culture is encouraging the exact opposite in males: emasculation. It's like the madonna-whore complex, except for guys. Girls must be either pure, asexual madonnas, or sexual, fallen whores; guys must be either fawning, doormat nice guys, or dominant, cruel jerks. It's too much polarization.

Retro made some good points about the effects of porn on the self-esteem of females. Likewise, it isn't always good for the self-esteem of males. I don't think porn in small amounts is a big deal, but when a guy is using it in large amounts, it is usually a manifestation of problems elsewhere in his life. If things aren't going well with real girls, then he probably isn't feeling good about himself, and porn offers a momentary escape. But is it a healthy escape? If you can't get anywhere with women in real life, is it really a good idea to go and pine for an image of a woman you know you will never have? Especially when you know you may well never have sex with a woman that hot in your entire life. As far as your sex life goes, porn is treating the symptoms in a way that worsens the disease.

I would say that porn is as good for a guy's sexuality as fast food is for your health. Imagine if you had to sit in front of a fancy French restuarant, looking at all the delicious food and smelling all the smells, but never be allowed to get any food from it. Instead, you must satisfy your massive hunger on a packet of french fries from McDonald's. Afterwards, you still feel empty and kind of queasy. Sure, McDonald's everyone once in a while isn't going to have much of an effect on your health. But if this was your only experience with food, would you be a happy camper, let alone a healthy camper? If you are hungry, it is much better for you to just go home and make yourself some waffles. I think we all know what I mean by that.

Furthermore, as Warren Farrell has pointed out, the most advertised thing in the media is... the female body. It gets more pages, website, and airtime than just about anything else. The reason people advertise is to inflate the demand for their product, and porn does exactly that with women. Suddenly, female sexuality becomes very expensive, and male sexuality is seen as worthless. Guys never call sex "giving it up." They can't, only women can. Consequently, when males have just about zero sexual power, it should be no surprise that suddenly violent porn where men are depicted as having all the power suddenly become popular. The power of the guy in the violent porno is proportional to the powerlessness of the guy who is watching it.

yeah but to argue that all men degrade women simply due to porn, or that it may have an influence on all men is a bit of a sweeping statement.

Of course porn doesn't give the most wonderful insight into soeciety today, but neither does feminism, terrorism, gang war, politics, the media, advertising or racism. It's all hatred or supressed primal instincts that we so wish to distance ourselves from as a "higher race" or as "civilised". In many cases our "civilisation" simply allows more eleaborate versions of these instincts to be put into place, but thats a whole different story.

There will always be those who will commit rape, be chauvinists etc. and yes there are some who have fantasies about these things society views as wrong, but the people you should really be targetting are those who cannot accept it as anything more than a fantasy.

You can't bundle a guy who watches porn to get off and respects women in the same category as a guy who watches degrading pornography and then goes out and rapes a woman or treats her like shit on principle, there are differing degrees it isn't clear cut. nothing ever is when it comes to us humans.

Love it or loathe it porn is fantasy and just a job, and it's when people don't distinguish that, in or outside of the business, when it all goes tits up and somebody becomes seriously fucked up. People who are influenced so easily will be influenced that easily by anything, its just a lottery of what they decide to pin their colours to; rape, terrorism, gang killings, random acts of violence, crimes of passion from obsessive stalking, obsessive stalking itself, acting out military fantasies or simply weapon obsession.

Ok porn isn't exactly the least twisted industry in the world, but it has some of the most safeguarded performers of any industry. It is efficiently run and all involved are consenting adults and they call the shots, not the directors. I honestly don't think you can blame the industry itself for the way certain people act and react. I can see why you are concerned and can empathise with that concern. However personally I am more concerned about the type of people who are so easily lead or allow themselves to be influenced by these sorts of things because i can't understand how they allow themselves to do so, but at the same time everyone reacts differently to the same stimuli.

i know the first things i learned of sex was not from porn because it was not easy to get ahold of back then, but i wonder now that porn is all over the internet for every 11year old boy to see if these subconcious messages might effect them more. i think time will tell on that, should bring this up again in like 6-10 years^^

Yeah I would agree with whatever the above poster said here, pornography isnt bad but provided it is being watched under the able guidance, now we cant definitely expect our parents to be a guide in this regard. There can be problems in youg minds as they can turn into sex maniacs if too much pron is shown to them. So at least there should be someone there who can explain them the pros and cons of the porn and thus help them to restrict the viewing to a certain extent. However I am not ready to accusse the rape and other sexual violences that are occurring nowadays to porn.

I am sorry to say that this is not the case, sex sells we all know that and with the introductions of so many varities like sex can now be seen on mobiles too this is not easy to keep a check. Every now and then people come up with new ideas to promote sex and there are no shortage of viewers either, so gone are the days when someone could teach us about the pros and cons of these, rather we should look forward to put a check on the growing number of places where sex sells.

I think the OP made really good points about pornography.

... it is not reality, and as long as people understand that, there is no problem. [/b]
It's not reality but men do hold porno sex and pornstars on a certain pedestal of sexuality. Women see men being turned on so much by these women in these movies that they are logically going to assume that this is really what their man wants and are going to try to become closer to it because they nautrally want their man to desire them the same way they seem him desiring some nameless faceless girl.

There has always been tension and anger between the sexes. Power imbalances. This new wave of violent porn is just one last manifestation of the anger men have towards women. What method are women using to return their anger at men?[/b]

Ecellent point. I do think porn show cases alot of men's anger towards women. And I would also wonder what women's retaliation to that is. It's a good question. Maybe women's retaliation is the men are pig jokes and the other put downs women use.

Porn affects the way women view themselves and affects what they think of as sexy. That's kind of a disturbing thought.[/b]
Yes. Porn does effect women and how they view themselves and how they think men view women. Why wouldn't it? Men continually seek out porn. Women are going to logically use it as a factor in seeing what turns on a man. And many women don't meet up to men's porn standards of what is beautiful. The sad thing is women so desperately have a natural need to feel beautiful to a man just the way a man feels naturally more dominate. But women can never have that because we are never beautiful enough. There is alwyas another porno girl out there. YOunger, bigger boobs and longer hair extentions.

I actaully like more dominate men. The problem is, that men want to be the leaders. But right now what women would give over that type of control to a generation of men that like seeing women be told what worthless whores they are and taking a guys sperm on her face. No woman is going to trust a man enough to give him the type of role he really desires with a real life partner when they already abuse women through pornography.

    A) It's not like I exactly had to go back pages to find this topic. It was on page one.

    B) Umm hello, the topic in this thread is about porn. How am I not keeping it on topic.

Man. The people here must be 12 years old.

How could it be on page one? Yours was the first post in nearly a year.
I think it was an appropriate topic for you to post in, I don't have a problem with that, but i don't think it could have been on page one unless you were especially looking for it

Well Peaches, you suprised me by not properly reading what someone else has said... <_<

I think Ghetto meant keep your views and opinions on pornography in one topic aka one thread. This will prevent your porno hatred spreading across the entire forum.

Your insults really hurt as well... i mean 12? wow..low blow...
