Mental clarity will not come in moments, the mind is used to distractions, deprive it of them and it hallulidates. Give it many tries before one achieves true mental silence.
Recently, I've been trying to meditate to gain some control over myself and my mind, however, I'm having trouble keeping concentration.
I try to "clear my mind" and the only thing that happens is a brief period of clarity and then a host of random images fill my brain.
Is there anything I can do to help keep the clarity longer?

Shadow's right, it just takes practice. If you are just starting you can try focusing on a candle or a certain sound so that your mind has SOMETHING to focus on, but eventually you won't need it anymore.
I can't concentrate that long either when I finally do have images flashing through my mind. I've read that the best thing to do is to not concentrate on those images and not to try and find their meaning while meditating.
If you just want to plain out meditate, some people say to bring religion into it if you want and make noises, like "ohhhhhhm." Candles, incense and music on low in the back ground help out a lot too.
General Info.<--My friend sent me this link and it helped me out, perhaps it can help you out also.
What helps me is having imagined white blank piece of paper in my mind that is completely perfect with no markings on it at all.. When I catch myself thinking about something else I immediately go back to examine the blankness of the paper.
Or you could try turning out the lights, covering your eyes up with your hands in a comfortable position and then gaze into the darkness.. letting it devour you and your senses completely until you no longer feel encumbered by the burden of your thoughts.

I understand your frustration. I don't believe I've EVER had a clear mind, not even for a moment. Seriously, it just doesn't shut up.
So in conclusion, I have nothing to add to this thread. Sorry. :P
Thanks everybody!
I'll do anything that might help.
I have lots of things to think about (and worry about, no less) all day and then when I try to calm down, it ends up being tough not to think "did you do *this small thing*?" or "better get started on homework"
Not to mention, I tend to get small itches when I try to meditate and try to not scratch them and it ends up iritating the hell out of me.
lol

When I meditate I do not try to clear my mind but rather focus my thoughts on one thing that requires my attention. Do not clear your thoughts and have an empty head like the pagans but instead focus your mind.
...meditate in silence...breath in and feel the useless thoughts that litter your mind leave as you exhale...concentrate on your navel...then as you feel yourself relaxing and leaving your body listen in the silence...listen for God's voice speaking to you...or think about that which must be thought about...seperate from your body...and most importantly give the Lord silent praise and worship...asking him for his guidance and calm spirit...the tranquility that only God can give...
...but do not end here...when you eat an orange take the time to observe the orange...feel it...taste it...hear it...smell it...see it...know it...look for your God in it. It is only a matter of time before you can give your complete focus to a simple thing that allows you to relax beyond your wildest imagination.

Sometimes if I have a whole bunch of thoughts going through my head or anger. I write my thoughts, feelings, anger, basically whatever I am feeling, on to a piece of paper. I turn off all my lights and light a candle. I write all the stuff down, by the light of the candle. After I write so much that my hand is tired, I stop and fold up the piece of paper and I do not read it. I don't think about what I had just wrote down and doing the writing puts me at ease. I then meditate after folding the paper. After awhile, when I feel totally relaxed and peaceful, I take the candle and go outside with the note and burn it.
This helps me not think about so much when I am trying to meditate and helps with some of my anger, stress, thoughts, etc. So perhaps this could help you not think so much while you meditate.
Good luck.
Mascerate! Arg!
No idea, everytime I try to do it my mind is clear for about 2 minutes and the next thing I know I'm waking up.
