I can't donate blood because I've had cancer.[/b]
Am I the only one that didn't know about this? What type of cancer did you have? I'm glad you're okay. I'd imagine having cancer is quite scary.

I couldn't donate blood in and after high school, because I didn't weigh enough. of course, that didn't prove to be a problem later. After not weighing enough wasn't an issue, my problem was being anemic. Now that I'm no longer anemic, I can't donate because of permanent cosmetics. And since I get it touched up every year to year and a half, I really only have up to a 6 month window where I can donate.

I thought it was fairly well-documented on the site. I had testicular cancer in 2005. It wasn't scary because the survival rate for testicular cancer approaches 100%, especially if you catch it early, which I did.

But rules are rules and you can't donate blood until you've been free of cancer at least 10 years.

It probably was well-documented on the site. However, I was gone for quite a while and it was right around that time.

Out of curiosity, what about pre-cancerous cells? Does that count as far as not being able to donate?

Yeah, I'm just being a jerk.

But I don't know if they care about precancerous cells. It's not one of the questions they ask, if I remember correctly. It was just weird because my cancer was such a non-event in my life, just had a couple surgeries, took 5 weeks off from work and I was done. The only remaining aftermath is I can't give blood or get affordable life insurance. Otherwise, pneumonia was way worse.

I've wanted to be a blood donor ever since I can remember, really. It's just been a given in the back of my head that 'someday,' I would give blood. Last year I tried and my iron count was slightly too low, but not low enough to be a worry, so yesterday I ate two hamburgers and my iron was fine. However, my veins are too small. They looked at both arms twice, had me doing all sorts of things, and three different nurses were all saying how small my veins are. But they tried anyway.. and the needle's just too big.

I'm very upset because I really want to donate blood, but they were saying I can never donate blood unless my veins get bigger. How can I do that? I've heard that being more hydrated and lifting weights can help.. but is that true?[/b]

I have very small viens as well. Whenever I get blood drawn, nurses have trouble getting blood from my viens in my arms and usually they end up sticking the viens in my hands. They have different size needles and I know they use smaller ones on me.

But I have never been able to donate blood because I don't weight enough, not because of my veins. I mean, basically they are telling you if you ever had a medical problem they couldn't take blood from you because of your veins which is ridiculous. Unless maybe blood drives have a limited amount of supplies and only have needles that fit most people? I don't know.

Logically, even sick very young children manage to get needles in their arms, I don't see why they couldn't with you. Again, unless their supplies only have needles for the average common vein size.

To the OP,

My girlfriend actually works for the National Blood service here and works at the various blood donor clinics around town. If i remember correctly the reason why you cannot donate with small veins is that if they use a smaller needle, the blood does not flow as quickly and the blood can start to coagulate inside the needle or the bag and they end up having to throw out the donation as it is unusable at that point. As for being too small, that is a health issue. The donation bags are a standard size so if you are below a certain size/weight, you technically do not have enough blood volume in you to safely donate.

Hope that answers your question.
It is all an illusion...

I'm not too small to give blood- I'm well above the weight cutoff. My only problem is the veins. Does she know any way to make them bigger?

I didn't read the entire topic, so if this was brought up my bad. You don't by chance smoke or anything do you? We are always getting IV's and blood, they always say don't smoke, dip, chew, or anything well prior. Just a thought.

Side Note:
I cannot donate because I had a tattoo done in georgia, and I've been deployed. I will be able to give blood again in 2011. Good shit huh?

I didn't know people tried subliminal spamming on message boards.

I can't donate blood because apparently gayness can be transferred?
I was so excited to go and participate in a blood drive at the local public library even before I knew they were giving free tubs of ice cream with every donation :P Went through all preliminary tests which did not include that question of who you've had sex with...got into the "donation" office where they extract your blood, and there they did ask me, so I did not lie... I felt so embarassed and rejected For my trouble the nurse gave me my free tub of ice cream anyway

What?

I'm sorry, Mikuriel. =\ It's a stupid rule. Being gay doesn't mean you've had unprotected sex, and straight people can have AIDS, too.

Well, basically.. I was born premature, and had to have two transfusions- one from a stranger, and one from my dad. But right now, the only thing I can do is donate blood and/or be a bone marrow donor.. and since I'm not at all afraid of needles and blood doesn't make me squeamish, the only thing that would keep me from donating would be a physical impossibility, such as having veins that are too small.

When I went to donate blood the day after my 17th birthday (you have to be 17), my friend also tried to give blood, but my veins were too small, even though my iron count and my answers to the questions they asked did not stop me. I'm only 5ft tall and was also premature, so I can understand my veins being small. I don't have any problems about blood or needles either.
But my friend was rejected to give blood because he had a transfusion when he was born. And he's scared of needles.

I know how you feel. Wanting to donate but not being able to. I used to donate every 56 days but then I lost some weight and now I'm less than the minimum weight to be able to do it. I then thought about gaining weight to be able to donate but I dont gain weight fast so that hasn't worked out very well.

Plus I have O- blood so I feel really bad for not being able to donate.
