get a gun and a bucket
I've wanted to be a blood donor ever since I can remember, really. It's just been a given in the back of my head that 'someday,' I would give blood. Last year I tried and my iron count was slightly too low, but not low enough to be a worry, so yesterday I ate two hamburgers and my iron was fine. However, my veins are too small. They looked at both arms twice, had me doing all sorts of things, and three different nurses were all saying how small my veins are. But they tried anyway.. and the needle's just too big.
I'm very upset because I really want to donate blood, but they were saying I can never donate blood unless my veins get bigger. How can I do that? I've heard that being more hydrated and lifting weights can help.. but is that true?
I've also heard they can use 'pediatric' needles to draw blood for donation? But I asked the nurses and they said that if they used a smaller needle on me, it would take too long and my blood would start to clot.
So.. SHORT VERSION: I'm just looking for any advice on how I can overcome my small veins to donate blood in the future.

I'm pretty sure being hydrated helps this. I knew a girl in high school who passed out a lot and it turned out she had some weird thing where blood wasn't being pumped enough throughout her body and she had to drink lots and lots of fluids to keep her blood hydrated.
Also- they're retards. People who small veins can just have them use pediatric needles. As if children are just screwed if the need an IV because their veins are too small.![]()

Yea, does not make much sense to me either. If this was some sort of blood drive though, they may not have had the smaller needles on hand. Generally, children can not donate blood as the smaller total volume makes it dangerous.
So, if I may ask, why so determined to give blood? You have a rare type, or simply hoping what goes around will come around?
Oh yes, and please do not make the joke about 'could you have some vodka with the juice'. The only thing that is funny about it is the number of people that seem to think it is clever.
Ayuh, not dead yet. Might change that with an S1000RR though

The gay community embraced me just as I was working through my own sexuality and gave me a safe place to deal with that. not necessarily, he's had sex with a male since 1977...that's one of the questions they ask you.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Tequesian @ Feb 21 2009, 04:47 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div>Well, basically.. I was born premature, and had to have two transfusions- one from a stranger, and one from my dad. My dad had kidney failure when I was young, and died after a few years of horrible dialysis treatments. Because of this, I have a very strong conviction that I shouldn't take my health for granted, and that I should use it to help those who aren't so healthy, in any way I can. I want to be an organ donor when I die, and donating a kidney [while I'm alive] is a possibility in the future. But right now, the only thing I can do is donate blood and/or be a bone marrow donor.. and since I'm not at all afraid of needles and blood doesn't make me squeamish, the only thing that would keep me from donating would be a physical impossibility, such as having veins that are too small. But I'd never considered the possibility, and was really excited about finally being a donor and starting the whole 'twice a year' cycle or whatever it is.So, if I may ask, why so determined to give blood? It was a blood drive and they didn't have any smaller needles.. but the nurses did say that even if they did have smaller needles, it would take 'hours' to fill the bag and my blood would clot before then. Is that true at all or were they just misinformed?
[I am 10-15 pounds over the minimum weight, so the rest of me isn't too small.]
Ive given blood before. I feel like ive achieved something pretty great, and all its cost me is a bit of time. The blood comes back anyway, and if my donation helps save a life then thats just amazing.
In the UK, when i gave blood, i had to of "filled the bag" within 15 mins. Not quite sure why though, i imagine its to do with clotting, like Tia said.

eh... it takes about... 5 minutes to fill a bag with normal veins. i don't see it taking "HOURS" like this nurse is telling you. maybe 20 minutes on the outside... i'd go to the blood bank and get more information there.

my book... srsly
it takes me 30 minutes to give blood, because apparently my blood is 'sandy'. And that's if the blood even comes out of me. I was unsuccessful the last 2 times, so i'm just going to give up trying i think

I can't donate blood because I've had cancer.
