So. It takes me forever to fall asleep. I work two jobs. And in the past two nights have had a total of 6 hours of sleep.

Yesterday I worked from 4:30 am to 10:30 pm with a three and half hour break in between. I got home and went straight to bed last night. Because I had to be at work at 5:30 this morning. And I couldnt sleep! Its so frustrating. I laid there and stared at the ceiling for two hours. Till it was 1am. And then woke up at 4:30. Gah. Now im home from work....and Im trying, desperatly, to take a nap. Im exhausted. Im so tired. But I cant sleep. Ive been laying here for two hours again and its just not happening.

Do sleeping pills really work? Can you use them for naps? What can I use for naps? I didnt even drink ANY caffine today, just so I could get a good nap in before fathers day dinner. I usually drink a cup of coffee when I get to work, but not today. I feel misersable. GAh.

sleeping pills will affect you for a certain amount of time. generally 8 hours. and they take a fair while to kick in.

    doesn't sound ideal.

to sound like a hippy. if you can't sleep, try meditation, it's suprisingly similar in affects (i think it's actually supposed to be twice as effective as sleep) and it helps you learn to turn off which helps you get to sleep quicker when you want to.

why are you working such hellish hours? you'll destroy yourself if you do it for too long.

I have a friend who actually spends a good portion of his sleep time mediating instead. Hour for hour it rests him more. So like, two hours of mediation plus six hours of sleep, he would wake up more refreshed than he would after a solid eight of sleep.

Also, even if you don't know how to mediate, even just lying there being calm and still and relaxed is as close to sleep as you're going to be able to get anyway, right? And keeping your eyes closed will rest your eyes. You don't have to lose consciousness to rest. That's a common misconception that makes people's insomnia worse because they lie there worrying about how tired they are instead of just relaxing.

Well, I know how painful it is to be lying in bed forever and not being able to fall asleep, running helps me, no matter how exhausted I am I try to find the last resources of energy in my body and force myself to go running, when I come home after 60-90 minutes I am refreshed, but it is a temporary feeling, as soon as my head touches the pillow I fall asleep, it takes me maximum 10 minutes, while normally it can take me 3 hours.

Also, try not thinking too much, focus on one thing, i.e. some adventure you had, a movie you watched, your boyfriend (but don't think about all the great moments you spent together, try thinking about how you met him for the first time or whatever you want, just don't let your thoughts jump from one subject to another.)

If you really want to try sleeping pills maybe start with some herbal pills.
It seems to me that if you or I must choose between two courses of thought or action, we should remember our dying and try so to live that our death brings no pleasure on the world

If you can’t force you body to sleep try to cheat it. Work up some schedule an hour or so before sleeping and stick to it. You don’t even have to go to bed at the same time, though it helps. It works for me. The schedule may involve anything like catching some fresh air for a while, reading a book for another twenty minutes, then a glass of wine etc. If you repeat it day by day, your body will start getting ready as soon as you begin your schedule.

Yeah having an orgasm works for me. I heart it.

I count backwards by 3's from 300. I am usually asleep by 240ish. I agree with the person talking about a routine. When you're all pumped up after work it's going to be hard to slee. I agree with Gutter in that respect...otherwise, make time for a warm bath with lavendar oil before bed. You have to think about the mood your body is in, even though your mind is like "okay, I need to sleep" your body is like "party party party". I play late games of basketball (sometimes finishing at 11 PM) and it is really hard to get to sleep after those. The bath thing works for me, or a long shower. Try getting into yoga, although I don't do it myself, I've heard it can be invigorating and that there are certain poses you can do to help yourself get sleepy.
