    Home Remedies

What are your personal favorites for colds? Also what do you do to keep from not getting sick during this season?

Silly questions but im tired of having something new each week.

um might sound dumb but let your body climatize to the weather.. um wash your hands before eating and after you go to the bathroom and get your shots and immunizations, dress in layers and avoid sick people. workout and stay in shape.

This and sleep. Whiskey doesn't hurt either.

Eating well and lying in bed chain-drinking cups of tea.
The broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying. These people know only too well how to use falsehood for the basest purposes... Adolf Hitler

I'm so glad I'm recovering from this stupid cold. I totally had bacon fever when school started and it was miserable but it passed pretty quickly because I tend to care of myself really well when I get sick and recover quickly because I don't marinate in pain killers and over the counter decongestants and cold medicines.

I find when I'm being a tea snob (read: drinking loose leaf), I tend to feel much better because I forget to drink water a lot and tea is just all around good for you. I drink a pretty big variety too which I'm sure helps a lot. Tea-bags are kind of like the fast food of the tea world and I'm sure they're good for you but certainly don't provide as much health benefits as loose tea. I read this is one of my tea books somewhere... but anyway, unless you have access to tea diffusers, drinking from regular tea bags is only going to do you good so it's not a big deal. ALSO I drink a lot of airborne when I feel I'm about to get sick.

When I'm already sick- I make egg drop soup! I put white pepper in it which helps clear my nose and I put some cayenne in it and sesame oil. Yesterday we had leftover chicken and rice so I put both of those in my soup. It was probably the best sick food ever. It's like easiest thing in the world to make too, takes like 5 minutes and it's super delish, so PM me if you want the recipe. Lately I've found I can't stomach canned chicken noodle soup because it's so salty. Weird?

When I have tons of phlegm, I eat spinach salads with vinegar and oil, emphasis on the vinegar. It definitely helps break up the shit in your throat and you can actually taste something, plus spinach and vinegar are great for you.

That's all I can think of. I think people forget to eat a lot when they're sick and just stick to fluids but I feel so weak if i do that. So if I can't eat because of a sore throat I try to stick to fruit smoothies and mashed potatoes, whatever works.

Spit out all phlegm. If there's shite in my nose, I blow it out, if there's shite in the throat, I cough it out. I can tell when I'm going to get ill because cigarettes start tasting very unappealing and I get a runny nose. As long as I keep the phlegm away from my lungs and throat, I'll avoid getting a full on cough.

When I do have a full on cough, honey, lemon, whiskey, done.

I'm a big van of airborne. Great stuff. It's saved my butt on several occasions. In fact, it just did. One of my bosses had a head cold but all I got was a sinus headache for a couple days because I took airborne.

As for home remedies, I make what I call "knock the snot out of you chicken noodle soup". There's enough garlic and onions in there to scare anyone away, but damn does it make you feel so much better.

First find out exactly what it is, cold, flu, some other virus, infection, allergy, etc. Aside from things to make you comfortable, for a cold, take zinc gluconate or zinc acetate, vitamin C, keep hydrated, and rest.

Thanks all. I was looking for a "take this for this and it works" sort of home remedies and you have inspired me!

I asked for home remedies because i hate swallowing pills. Airbourne tastes disgusting just like most medicine so i rather avoid it. I became sick right before midterms and have been in a grandma state ever since. The flu shot also made me sick. whomp.

Ghetto whats egg drop soup? It sounds disgusting but fb me the recipe anyway. My nose will become raw if i don't take care of it soon enough.

My voice currently sounds incredibly sexy and raspy. I will either get better or go to the next stage which is the 80yr old chain smoker voice...not sexy.

Yeah my boyfriend doesn't much care for airborne either - he calls it 'fizzy gluck'. But he's seen how good of a job it does so he manages to glurp it down. Sometimes under protest.

I've been taking olive leaf extract. Its been pretty good.
However, when the bottle runs out and i don't bother to replace it, i usually come down with a throat infection. So i need to remember to keep buying it.

I really like lemon juice. When I drink it a lot I also happen to be healthier. Also good during a cold with some honey for cough.

Orange juice has been known to keep my sniffles from turning into a full-blown cold, though whether that's placebo effect or Vitamin C, I don't know. Those little hard-candy-like Vitamin C drops work the same way, and they taste good.

Boiling some water on the stove and inhaling the steam for a few minutes always helps me breathe if I do wind up with a cold. I also make sure to get more sleep than normal.

My grandma would make homemade cough syrup, honey, lemon juice, and syrup. And although I think they are nasty, grapefruit helps. Also, it is so beyond gross, but buy some oregeno extract, put a drop under your tongue once a day for a couple days, before you know it, you'll be ready to pull a brain.
