A doctor's sole job is to keep you healthy, not to educate you. To ask his opinion on how much of a bad thing you could get away with, almost always he'll say none. Its like if I went to the doctor and said, 'hey, i heard alcohol absorbs faster through your rectum, how many shots of vodka do you think my body could handle in the ass" he'll kick me out of his office, assuming I'll probably misinterpret what he says and end up in a coma and try to blame him.

Well of course it's not 'good for you' it's just a bit of a laugh and a joke.
The broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying. These people know only too well how to use falsehood for the basest purposes... Adolf Hitler

well, that's what I take issue with, then. I'm paying them to be expert and if I'm asking a question, I want the true answer not the "well you might be a bit of a wino" version.

But medical professionals aren't the same as supermarkets. What is it with the idea that if you're paying someone, you can demand what you want from them? If someone's expert advice is 'don't do it' then you get what you pay for, no?

Yea, if you hire a panel of experts to conduct a study for your, then you'll get a more comprehensive answer than what a doctor can advise.
