    Meth labs

I don't know anything about drugs, so i'm hoping someone can shed some light for me. I've been googling the topic but haven't learnt what i want to know yet.

Prior to getting married, I moved house. About a week after moving in, the house next door was busted by the cops as being a meth lab. Three cops collapsed from the fumes and had to be taken to hospital. I don't know if that's a normal thing for busting meth labs or a measure of how bad it was. The local newspaper seemed to make it sound really bad, but they aren't really a good source of accurate news.

So i've been told that living in a house that used to be a meth lab can be dangerous because it absorbs into the walls and you can never get rid of it. Is it possible that it can be absorbed from next door as well? I'm thinking its not as likely, but a friend has a come up with this theory that the reason i've been sick the last few months is because of the meth lab fumes absorbed into my house.

I'm told that a cat urine smell means something, and before we renovated the place, there was a terrible smell. But I put that down to the ferral cats that live around the house. Apparently the cats used to be allowed in the house as they liked. So it could just actually have been cat urine.

    My neighbourhood is so dodgy.

Anyway, is it even a possibility that my friends theory is correct?

I've never heard anything like that before. In my Administration of Justice classes and general information I've picked up has just led me to believe that living next to a meth lab would be dangerous because the chemicals used to create it are very volatile and if there isn't proper ventilation, can easily explode and cause a large fire.

Curious post so I asked my bf as he was actively involved several years ago with the neighborhood patrol to clean up the area. A couple of things. Meth doesn't smell like cat urine. He says the closest thing he can think of that it smells like is a combination of burning hair and burning skin. Nasty stuff apparently.

It is possible that the fumes emanating from next door while they were cooking up the meth made you sick. However, now that they are gone there isn't much of a danger to you at this point from it. He put it up there with the odds of winning the lottery.

As to meth being absorbed into the house, it's the fabric stuff that the hazmat clean up crews get rid of. Carpet, furniture etc. But not the walls.

If you want to know more, you should try to contact your local fire department hazmat team.

The only point of concern is that they may have dumped the waste product around your property - like in the backyard. Especially if you bought a vacant house that sat empty for a while.

Well if a house with a meth lab catches on fire, it's pretty bad since it burns and releases toxins into the air around the surrounding neighborhood. I'm guessing if the house burns down regardless of whether there's a meth lab currently in it, then there's still a danger of previous spills/fumes that are in the carpet/walls being released.

The cat urine smell they are talking about is probably from the use of ammonia which is used to break down the pills they use to make meth.

The only real danger is an explosion which causes a fire that spreads. For there to be enough fumes next door to kill you we would be talking Steven Seagal Mob Movie level meth lab.
