How long have you been smoking?
So I promised this sweet little girl, who's the daughter of my uncle's new wife, that I'd quit smoking. I kind of regret that promise, because I haven't been able to completely kick the habit yet. But I'd like to become completely smoke free, not only because of the promise, but also because I'd been thinking about quitting for months before I made the promise, and besides, it's bad for health.
So far, only so good. I don't buy cigarettes anymore, so I'm not really addicted to nicotine anymore, but when my fiancé smokes, it gets so hard to not bum one of his cigarettes. We live together. And I do smoke occasionally when I'm partying. I have so many friends that smoke, friends whom I've given cigarette or a few in the past, so they're willing to give me that one cigarette if I join them for a smoke.
I've tried not to beat myself up for occasionally still smoking, because I know that'd only make give up trying to quit it before I'd manage to. But, ehh, I do feel bad, cuz I made a promise to a seven-year-old.
The habit is the worst thing to get rid of. I love it, hello, my name is Mal, and I love smoking.
Has anyone here managed to quit smoking while their s/o still smoked?

I don't have much advise to give because I don't smoke/have never smoked but I understand where you're coming from with it. My aunt and her wife are full time taking care of their granddaughter now and my aunt wants to quit smoking so the baby isn't exposed to it. She's gotten close but her wife still smokes, chain-smokes at that, so it's been insanely difficult for her to and she keeps falling back into it.
I have heard that the only way to quit smoking is if you want to for yourself. As much as people want to keep a promise to somebody else, it's hardly ever enough to get them to quit. You say you do want to quit for yourself too so that's good. I suppose the best thing you can do is stay determined and remember that you have to start back from square one if you smoke again.
Not entirely sure how helpful that all is, but I wish you luck.
"Why do we have to grow up? I know more adults who have the children's approach to life. They're people who don't give a hang what the Joneses do. You see them at Disneyland every time you go there. They are not afraid to be delighted with simple pleasures, and they have a degree of contentment with what life has brought - sometimes it isn't much, either."--Walt Disney
Thank you. I think that did help a little bitIt's nice to know that you understand. So you have a lesbian aunt??? Man, I have such a fetish for lesbians!!! I used to keep my hopes up that my aunt was a lesbian but it turned out she's straight

I went thru exactly this last week. I made it thru 5 days with only one cig.
But I totally fell off the wagon again. It's way too hard when youre living with/engaged to a devoted smoker.
So we're just gonna quit together... Eventually. Teamwork.
'Cause I'm that fool that broke the key- I'm unlockable so don't check me- I got weight on my shoulders and things on my mind- The sky is falling and I'm falling behind... No shame in my game just par for the path- I try to hone my craft because at hand's the task- But I find I'm not playing with a full deck- I'm up to my neck like Toulouse Lautrec
You don't have to keep promises you make to children. Just don't smoke when you're near her.
Yeah, I mean.. when I was a kid I got all worried about my dad smoking, and made him promise to quit. Then years later, I saw him smoking and I got really upset and started crying. But that's just to show you that it really is difficult to quit solely, or even mainly, for somebody else. You promised her you would quit, you never said WHEN you would quit. I'm 100% for quitting smoking, it really is extremely unhealthy in multiple ways, but at the same time I'm realistic- and cutting back 'most of the time' is certainly better than not cutting back at all. One cigarette a day is 'better' than five.
One thing you can do that might help is to at least try to set some boundaries with your fiance. He should respect you enough to understand. For example, you could ask him to only smoke outside or with the window open, instead of smoking inside the house. You could also have gum with you wherever you go, and when your friends start smoking, pop a piece of gum in your mouth- then you 'can't' smoke, because you're chewing gum instead and who wants to spit out a nice fresh piece of gum?
He doesn't smoke inside, we have a cat. He mainly smokes outside. But I'm a sucker, I keep asking for cigarettes from my friends, even though I don't buy them myself. But yeah, the gum idea sounds worthy. I'm gonna try it.

"Shit happens. Character is how you react to it."
Yesterday I smoked only two, today the number's been four - and I'm still gonna smoke one if Markus lets me bum from him.

I used to smoke a pack a day and lived with my mom and dad and sister who smoked just as much. It was hard. I did a lot of deep breathing exercises when I was having nic fits, and I drank a lot of hot tea and water. The burning of the back of my throat with tea relieved the itchiness of needing to inhale smoke. I also started smoking more weed. The first 2 months were the worst. After that I was alright and I cut down on the weed. I been cig free for over 3 years now and I can't imagine ever smoking again, which is funny because when I first quit I felt weird NOT smoking.
Tell him smoking causes erectile dysfunction. Really.
Hi Cara,
Some effective tips to quit smoking are:
Makeup your mind, stick to your goals and consult doctor. Set a quit day and make your quit day special. Keep money you would spend on cigarettes in a saving jar and plan for a treat tomorrow. Avoid going to places where you might find smokers.
I found the article on smoking and erectile dysfunction. This should scare him to stop smoking. Smoking also destroys your penis
