Soooooooooooooooooooo..........

At the moment, as some of you may have noticed, I'm singing in a band. However, whilst that's my main focus at the moment, I'm still busy making my own music in my bedroom. As glamorous as it sounds, it's still a lot of fun and you learn something new every time you sit down to make something. Right now I'm experimenting with making beats on an old Casio keyboard running through an guitar effects loop. Sounds pretty good but there's some way to go. Anyway, I've got a few demo files knocking around, some just ideas and snippets and a couple of fully arranged songs. My recording ethos basically means that I use first takes as much as possible because I'm only writing and arranging at the moment so yeah, nothing's perfect but you can get an idea of what I'm going for with each song.

Your input is greatly valued and I want to see what you guys think of my music so I can take your advice and criticisms on-board and make some kickass music. So, I'm slightly nervous about what you guys will think of my bedroom tunes.

They're definitely not all one style of music. In fact, this stuff is all pretty varied so don't be thinking it's a load of metal songs (there are no metal songs).....

Bring Me Down - An idea I'm knocking around at the moment. It's just me playing the electric guitar and singing.

Give Into Me - A Michael Jackson cover!!! It's from the 'Dangerous' album and it rocks. Although this cover is more in the vain of some doom bands.

[Isoid] - A slow, moody, reflexive piece which I enjoy very much. I know it's a bit longer than the others but if you could listen to the end I would be grateful.

Mexican - Started out as a joke Mexican song on the acoustic guitar. Changed quite substantially into a more atmospheric piece.

Something in the Way - Not the Nirvana song. The most 'traditional' of these tunes. This one is just me and my acoustic guitar (with a couple of overdubs). All done in one take. I hope you like it because I do.

Sorry - I wrote this after I had an argument with my girlfriend. I really like the texture of the sounds in this one. For some reason, every time I listen to it, I get the image of a bombed city in my head.

Okay, so there they are. Please give them a listen and let me know what you think. Once again, all input is welcome.
The broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying. These people know only too well how to use falsehood for the basest purposes... Adolf Hitler

I forgot to add that there's another tune at www.myspace.com/goldblumsfingers including live sax, no samples boy! The beat is my voice too.

Hey Brewt... some really nice stuff happening here! You have a good sense of melody, and your voice is really strong.

Bring me down - great hook, and although not a fully developed song yet, you've got some great elements to it already. Your vocal is awesome, and I reckon would be great used as an intro and a bridge... I'd like to see this as a full song - cos it has potential from what I've heard so far. I'd also like to hear your voice straight - without effect or being lost amongst instruments etc... just you.

Isoid - Love the lead guitar in this one... it's beautiful. Your music strikes me as soundtrack material - as in I can see it being used in that way. Which I suppose is what music is about really - making a soundtrack for people's lives. The water noises are cool too - did ya nick a soundbite? Or did you and your mic spend some time at the baths together? hehehe. The scream metal ending is super awesome by the way... wasn't expecting it, which is why it works! You still manage to remain melodic though, which is pretty important I think. Rock!

Something in the way - ahh... there's that voice I wanted to hear... niice. You've got a lovely tone. Something tells me you're not entirely confident in your voice yet... you seem to be holding back or maybe not entirely in control of it yet? I have only one tip - be more dynamic with your strumming... I find this often with rhythm guitarists or rock musicians, the strum becomes very samey. Although I haven't heard much of your stuff, so you may do different stuff with your strumming in other tunes. Add some dynamics level-wise, start soft & build up etc... or try out some more uncomfortable strums - tap strums/ jazz picking/ no pick irregular strums etc. Lovely song though - you could so pick up chicks with this one ;-)

Sorry - No wonder you envision a bombed city in this one... it certainly evokes an air of desolation - you must have been really sorry! :-) But on a more serious note, I too like the texture in this one. I would like to see more ebb & flow, but awesome stuff.

Sorry I don't have time to listen to the others, I will at some stage... but I have music of my own to be writing.

    Rock on!

Thanks very much for your input!!! It's much, MUCH appreciated.

The water and kids playing sound effects no Isoid are from a BBC sound effects CD I found. Pretty good but only for that one song really.

I recorded Something in the Way in my bedroom like everything else and at the time, pretty much everybody was home. I live with 7 other people and I feel a bit shy about singing at the top of my voice and really pushing myself because I don't really want everybody to hear me singing. By all means they can come and see my on stage but not in my bedroom!!!! When I come to record that tune properly I will definitely work on the guitar playing. I find it hard to sing and play at the same time which is why my picking/strumming is very simple.

I think I might use 'Sorry' as a short interlude when I come to putting these songs together on an album.

I'd love to hear your music PRChick if you've got a link or anything. Thank you very much for your kind and helpful words.

You are very welcome! Constructive feedback is so useful when creating stuff... sometimes you can ignore it happily, and other times it's amazing how true it is. That's why I love getting my music mixed by loads of different people, cos each one brings something new to the table and my music grows from what it was to me, into something new and exciting :-)

Ah yes, the dreaded busy household!!! I find it difficult and I only live with one other! It's the other way round for me, I find it hard to just play without singing - I suppose cos I'm a singer rather than a guitarist first & foremost... guitaring was just an addition for me!

If you had these streamable somewhere or all of them available in one big file to download and check out, it'd be way easier.

Get the fuck off my board you bitch.
