ok, so i've got this ball coming up, dress code says 'black tie and ball gowns' i've ruled out the ball gown option, so looking to probably hire a tux, u know the kind of thing i mean. Assume u lot across the pond (im in england) dress similarly for such occasions, so all opinions appreciated.

As i say its a formal night, drinking, dancing, etc...and there is a girl (isn't there always!), i want her, theres a bit of history there, and this night is basically going to be make or break, so i want to be looking at my best.

so yeah, dress me, i know there isn't too much choice for something like this,

i'm thinking along the lines of black tuxedo, white wing collar shirt, and black bow tie (a proper one, not the crap ready made things u normally get, so i can do the undone look with it hanging around my neck when the evening comes to a close!) and black shoes.

any opinions? i'm thinking simplicity, but really do want to be looking good, toying with the idea of waistcoats, cummberbunds, etc...what do u girls and guys think?

dont go too fancy. a standard tuxedo should be fine. I have a black tux with the wider legged pants, a pair of black patent leather shoes(wingtip) and long tie instead of bow tie. cant go wrong

Agreed MMSFH. Just a basic black tux that's comfortable and looks sharp.

As to the bow tie/neck tie... well it depends a lot on if guys where more bow ties for formals there and how formal the formal is. If it's a very formal occasion go for the bow tie - especially if most other guys are too. Ask around. If it's less formal then a neck tie will do just fine. When you're in the tux rental shop, try both out and see what you like best.

hi cheers, for replies, this is meant to both of u but dunno how to quote from different messages!

it will be a bow tie i think, its a ball, and dress code is 'black tie and ball gowns' which does generally mean bow tie, think its looks better with a tux as well.

any other thoughts? cant decide on the waistcoat thing, dont wanna look like a waiter! any1 know if u need any particular type of shoes? or just some black ones?

black, patent leather shoes. I prefer wingtips, but you can chose youre own style. Id definitely go with black patent leather no matter what style you choose though. Get a tux with a vest, no cummerbund. cummerbunds are never a good look...NEVER

    Black patent leather. Go shiny.

Agreed about the cummerbund too. A big no no. Especially since vests have more than one style.
