A little bit ago, there was this guy who died in a hunting accident, and my boyfriend was close to him. He saw and talked to him every day, and so we are going to a benefit dinner (that will raise money to help out his wife and kids). It is about a week away, so if I have to go buy something to wear I can, especially since I don't own a dress.

My problem is though, one of my friends said not to get too dressy, she said dark jeans and a nice top is fine. My other friend said that I should wear a dress.
I just don't want to show up and be to formal, or show up and not be formal enough. It is a dinner and an auction, any ideas?

If it isn't too dressy I would NOT wear jeans to any type of dinner like that. I would wear some nice slacks and a ncie blouse or button down top. You don't have to wear a dress if you arne't comfortable in them, just make what you do wear is nice and not ratty.

i always think that its better to be overdressed than underdressed. I'd probably skip the jeans and maybe where dressier pants. Can you contact the organisers to get the official word on the dress code?

I would wear a dress to a benefit dinner. It shows respect. It doesn't need to be a fancy schmanzy ball gown type dress. Just something simple. If you're unsure, then just stick with a little black dress.
