Go to the mall, buy what you like.
If someone were ignorant about fashion. Me for example. What would be the best sources to read/watch/listen to?
I'm not looking to become some expert, just more informed.

Yea, go to the mall, you could also bring a friend who has good fashion sense get their opinion on stuff. Or you could look at magazines and dress up like the celebrities.

savmotronPeople do what they do. I mitigate their hazard to me and move on.
stuff is just stuff. your emotional health is much more important. holding raging anger in is more harmful than your faggot-assed tv that probably deserves to get its ass beat anyway.
Echo on the bring a friend thing. I had a guy friend who wanted me to go with him shopping. He had no fashion sense and picked out all the ugliest clothes and none of it fit him properly. I got him straightened out soon enough and he agreed with me after seeing the difference. Just find a friend who's fashion you admire the most, and ask them to come along with you and help you pick out some things that'll look nice.

HA Ghetto Onion. I'm much like your guy friend.
I had a girlfriend who used to buy me clothes every time christmas or whatever came up. I remember the first time as I was opening my gift's I was thinking ,"It was awfully nice of her to get me this stuff. The clothes are rather bland and certainly not something I would have chosen. It's the thought that counts."...Then she insisted I try the stuff on to see how it looks. When I saw myself in the mirror I was amazed. I loved it. I wondered how she knew those cloths that looked bland alone would look so good togather.
I don't want to have someone just pick out clothes for me though. I want to understand what that person understands and make my own choices.

I agree with everyone else for the most part.
However, if i can add some advice... don't wear things you feel uncomfortable in. People will be able to tell if you feel awkward or uncomfortable in the clothes you wear, and it'll just seem like you're trying too hard.
When you go to the mall, take ques from the mannequins and what seems to be the most current trend, and just tailor it to your own needs/tastes so that you're comfortable.
Personally i think an unbuttoned dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, a plain shirt underneath, nice jeans, and dress shoes are classic and will never go out of style.
And in recent years i've liked what GAP has to offer especially with their low prices. Some of the stuff isn't that great, but they have some nice things if you know what you're looking for.

My ex had a little style, but nothing spectacular. He started working at Express (clothing store) part time to get a discount and it ended up doing wonders for his sense of style. He's now one of those dudes that other guys go to for fashion advice. If you have the time for it, I would recommend it. He ended up working like 8 hours a month and saved a lot of money on clothes. He was able to revamp his wardrobe without spending a ton.

This, this, a thousand times this.
At the end of the day you shouldn't buy and wear something because it's fashionable, you should buy it and wear it because you like it and you like the way it looks on you.
Fuck fashion, have a style of your own.
Get the fuck off my board you bitch.

Got to third this one. I recently jumped on the 'fashion' bandwagon and now have a few clothes i detest, although apparently they look nice. Score. Thankfully i realised soon enough and am back to buying what i like.

If you aren't feeling what the latest style is find something you like. Nice CLEAN top, good FITTING jeans, and neat shoes as in clean are the basics really. The most important bit most folk already have said is being comfortable and wearing what you like. Its all about how you carry yourself in the clothes. The clothes just help with the impression.HA Ghetto Onion. I'm much like your guy friend.
