Thread: Ballin' On a Budget

Aight so you want to follow BS' fashion sence but you're like me: broke as a joke.
Anybody that says "spare no expense with clothes" obviously doesn't have a knack for the spend-thrift shopper..

Well, I'm here to give you a few tips, tricks, and places on how to look like you have some style and not break the bank.
I have the funniest feeling Retro is going to argue with me about most of this crap, but I'll just say my opinion and she can deal with it..

Alright, first things first: Where to shop.
Damn, you know you can get a kickass long sleeve polo at Ralph Lauren for 60$..but hey...I don't have that kind of money.
Usually, I have to "make do" with American Eagle, Old Navy and American Outfitters.
Don't let the chain fool ya, fellas...
I like AE the best because the really stylish stuff (at least around here) is the stuff that makes it to the discount rack. Most guys in my area pick up the shirts that say "Laggers House of Ribs" or something stupid like that and completely neglect some of the cooler polos and jeans. If you want a nice undershirt to go under your polo I like to stick to darker colors like burgundy and navy blue...they generally match each other and are not hard to find.

Also, don't be afraid to go to a chain like Value City to get jeans or dark dress pants. Believe it or not, you can find alot of stylish shit for cheap prices. Don't hesistate to go to any other chain that buys things off of bigger chains.
I buy my oxfords there all the time. I would try your best to get name brand stuff. Many ladies can be pretty vain about that...so these places are great for that.

The Net is your friend--but only if you know your size and trust the company. For instance AE runs shit really small so if you're like me and usually get mediums everywhere..get a large there...

    Possible Places (again)
    AE (semidress/ semicasual)
    American Outfitters (casual stuff)
    Old Navy (really casual stuff)
    Bonton or JCPenney (dress)

Things to watch or stay away from:
Polka dots or fruity patterns (as in dpuck's "favorite shirt")
    Express, Sears
    Cargos
    Plaid
Trucker hats or even hats in general in alot of cases
    Really thin belts
Match your belts with your shoes..it's key
    FUCKING White Socks. Seriously...
You need not spend a fortune on expensive dress socks, but some color cordination is essential..

A few tips that don't cost anything.
If you're wearing a button up long sleeve polo..do what BS said...untuck the bastard. I'd advise rolling the sleeves as well. I personally like to wear a tshirt underneath and unbutton the top two buttons

Iron your shit. It takes 10 min and it can make all the difference

Smell nice. Even a sampler from Walmart will do. Yeah, this isn't exactly appearence, but it's pretty important.

    Last, but certainly not least..Bling
I find it that many women nowadays have a thing for silver, gunmetal or anything of that color. I bought this watch (below). I think it's a good example of something stylish that could go with anything.
Stainless steel is the way to go: cheap and good looking
A Real Nice Watch. Only 65$

I agree with most of what you said Mav.

I actually hit second hand stores, even Ross, TJ max and Burlington caot factory regularly. And i actually buy lots of stuff from those places....(OK, Ross, TJ max and burlington has thr fucking BEST home decore department, seriously. I bought all my cute lil hawiian silverwear, and some dishes there, ext, ext, for very inexspensive. And Ross has some cute swimsuits although i dont try them on because im sure some white trash chick trys them on with no underwear...so know yoru size...becasue those dressing rooms can be utterly nasty).

Anyways nothing wrong with shopping in cheapo, semi scary places as long as you are very selective with what you buy. Those stores have alot of lame out of date shit...but if you look around you can find some name-brand crap at a fraction of the price...just like they say on teh commercials! Ross actually has lots of 'polo' crap there.

I actually have a friend at school who is a 'starving artist' so to speak so he has NO cash to spare and he buys pretty much all his clothes at Goodwill and crap and you cant tell at all. He always looks super nice, never trashy, very sharp dresser

Im not a fan of AE tho. Blah. Could you get anymore boring/trendy/im going to go claim a moutain becasue i think im an outdoor preppy wanna-be stud. Ugh. I went in for chirstmas looking for something for Dustin and i was sickened by the lack of cuteness the guy clothes had...it was like fucking COLOR BLOCK t-shirts and shit. I was so bored with those clothes i almost feel asleep while clanking through the racks.

Old Navy is a pretty good place, its actually in the same chain as Gap...so its just a cheaper version, well much cheaper version of Gap. Thing is with Old Navy you have to be picky becasue some of their stuff SCREAMS cheap. But they do have cute pants for guys...just dont get those jeans opr pants with the stupid lil loop...like those capender pants, with the hammer loop. Dear god i HATE tho and swear most of old navy boy pants has that stupid loop. Nooooooooo Looooop!

Anyways no biggie where you shop just as long as you look nice

But i noticed you stuck match your belt and sheos in the "Things to aviod" catigory What?? No you NEED to make sure your shoes and belt match. Nothing worse then a sexy guy who cant even fucking match his belt and shoes. ::shutters:: Yuck.

You all seem sort of .... insane.

Or maybe I should just care more. That could be my problem, I don't dress like a pimp. Or a mountain climber.
What ever happened to the young man's heart
Swallowed by pain, as he slowly fell apart

And I'm staring down the barrel of a 45,
Swimming through the ashes of another life
No real reason to accept the way things have changed

Mav, your idea of a budget is my idea of really expensive clothes... DAMN!

Um... I like thrift shops, although I haven't had the balls to shop at the Ross or TJ Max here yet... I wish we had a Marshall's. The closest one is in Denver... *sigh*

Besides, at thrift stores, you can find those really old tshirts that are all soft and comfy.

Man am I glad you guys and girls don't see how I dress. The words "train wreck" would probably come to mind to someone like Retro or BS.

I shop cheap, because I wont wear anything with a logo on it...why should I pay to advertise something I have no emotional attachment too? So I end up with alot of plain t-shirts, polos, dress shirts from K-Mart or Value City. I think I look good for the amount of effort I put in but I'm sure no one I'm around really cares anyway.

Yeah i shop at vintage stores, well for my own clothes. I adore vintage shops and vintage shops has the cutest guy clothes! lil 50's shirts...ohhhh...yeah....cute! I but Dustin TONS of clothes from vintage shops...he doesnt wear half of them...but all it takes is a sad face then he will wear it at least once. But guys sporting the vintage look looks GOOOOOOOD, at least i think

And Girlie, Ross and TJ max arent bad. If i can go into them then i think anyone can. I dont really shop for clothes there much....becasue, eh the clothes arent really my style BUT they have cute purses, shoes, and HOME DECORE!!! Thats the reason i love Ross, purely all about home decore.

I bought this vase at Ross that i saw at Merin and Frank for 58 bucks, but i was like "Eh, i dont want to pay 58 bucks for a stupid vase" So i didnt buy it. Then i went to Ross like a month later and the same vase was there for 12.99. I was so excited. Same brand and everything. Not a chip on it. It was in perfect condition and i didnt have to pay 58 bucks for it! Plus they have cute pictures there. I bought a picture there for my living room for like 29 bucks which wasnt bad at all...becasue the same picture was at the mall in a picture place for 60 bucks. So i was like fuck yeah! Ohhh i love decorating

Yeah... I went to Ross to look for a big mirror (they didn't have one), but I ended up buying a set of wine glasses, a mortar and pestal, and cute green oven mitts. My mother took me dress shopping at Ross one time when I was little, and it kinda scared me.

There are cleaner thrift shops than the Ross here... Eeeeew!

And Mav, Kohl's clothes are cheap, as in so-cheap-they'll-fall-apart-in-the-washing-machine cheap. I regret buying almost everything I've bought from there.

I think I'll start with the vintage shops, next time I need clothes. There just aren't any nice, affordable places here.

Check E-bay for designer/normally expensive stuff, a lot of the manufacturers in thailand/phillipines/etc. sell the stuff for like $10-$20 with $10 shipping. This is a good deal for them since the workers only make $0.50 a day if they're lucky. Getting stuff that goes for $80-$100+ for $20 waiting a couple weeks for it to arrive is a great deal, just beware of knockoffs and try the stuff you want to get on in the store so you can figure out your size.
