That's actually not bad. I could have gotten you Biz Class for that, actually a bit less. Coach for around 500, but that's standby. Not that you'd have any probs with the dates you're traveling.
Have fun, take loads of pics and meet up with our UK brethren if you can!!

stuff is just stuff. your emotional health is much more important. holding raging anger in is more harmful than your faggot-assed tv that probably deserves to get its ass beat anyway.

Can anyone give me some advice when navigating on the Underground (Subway, Tube, Train?!?) ? I figure this will be my main source of transportation. Is it safe enough to travel at night? I ask because I am planning on seeing a lot of West End shows. How much does it cost for a pass?

Everyone uses the tube so you'll be fine. It's as safe as any place with large numbers of people. Passes range in price depending on where you're going. If you're going to use it every day then I'd look into getting an Oyester card which is like a pre-payment card you can use for paying for transport and also some bills and stuff I think. Single journeys tend to cost around £4 and about half of that with an Oyester card.
The broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying. These people know only too well how to use falsehood for the basest purposes... Adolf Hitler
Look into student passes/discounts. Everyone I know who's gone to Europe say that taking advantage of being a student has saved them loads of money.

Yeah you can also get a Young Person's Railcard which is good for intercity travel and that but if you're going to spending the vast majority of your time in London then I'd go with the Oyster card because it pays for buses as well as trains and it gives you a better discount on the tube.

Thanks, Brew and Ghetto! I will be spending 90% of the four months I am in London, actually in London, and the fact that it covers buses and the Underground is perfect. So Brew, I am just slightly nervous traveling at night by myself (I even took a self defense class--what a joke). What parts of the rougher parts of London should I avoid?

Well, the rough parts are the ones you probably won't be going to because they're mainly residential. Don't go to Poplar, Walthamstow or anywhere consisting of high-rise flats and loads of kids wearing hoodies. But really you should be absolutely fine.

An oyster card pays for itself in the first two journeys you make i think, just get a monthly pass and that's unlimited bus and tube travel.
don't worry too much about going to rough places, if you're going between soho for shows and kensington for home you'll be fine. I lived in the two areas of london that have the highest crime rates and in three months had one guy be a twat, and not particularly scarily. anywhere you shouldn't go you'll hear about before you have any reason to go there (don't believe the hype about south london, there is crime, but it doesn't care about you, as opposed to north london where you're the target)
night buses can be 'a little sketchy' but only in a keep your head down kind of way. my girlfriend used to go from camberwell to brixton (both a bit notorious) on her own at silly hours including changing and waiting at stops, and never saw anything nefarious.
erm, through my hungover rambling i'm trying to say that you'll be fine. And don't avoid south london because of the reputation. go to camberwell green for a night out and go shopping on Peckham rye. see some gigs in brixton.
EDIT: oh yeh, finding your way on the tube is fine, theres maps everywhere. i'd recommend taking the bus as much as possible though, it gives you a really good sense of what's where and you see loads of cool things you wouldn't otherwise. I used to go past the houses of parliament most days on the bus which was brilliant!
Ty, Atom's Package. I really appreciate the help. I am so incredibly excited to just be in the city, walk around, and experience life as a Londoner. I won't have a lot of money, so I will be doing a lot of window shopping, which I'm okay with. It will be an amazing experience, as I have never been anywhere outside the States.

Alright, I did london on £15 a week for three months, you'll find loads to do, but i'll try and remember some of my favourite cheap stuff:
Walk across waterloo bridge towards the south, just on the south bank go down the stairs to your right, near the bottom of them is a big poster thing that lists what's going on in london for free.
also just bimble around the south bank, it's a collection of venues that always have cool things on, often free, especially in the lobbies/foyers. also lots of really good musicians play on the streets around the south bank area.
Borough Market is on the south side of London Bridge just next to southwark cathedral, it's an amazing (and huge) place to wander round and take in sights and smells
Walk around The City (it's the financial district, not the actual 'city') on a weekend, it's completely empty and is made up of a combination of huge very modern skyscrapers, and cool medieval street layout and buildings
The natural history museum and science museum are next to each other, right next to south kensington tube, they're both brilliant and free.
Westminster abbey is definitely worth the £10! there's nowhere else with so much epic history (although i am a history geek)
So Atom, how much is a pound compared to a dollar? When you said ten pounds, you seemed like it was quite expensive. Is it like, one pound is equal to five American dollars? I know our dollars are shit compared to the pound.

You can look that up online quite easily. It's about 1.6 dollars to one pound right now. I'm studying in London in the spring, too, btw.

No, a pound is more than a dollar because you need $1.60 to buy £1.
