Back in the day, it was the hackers (or more warez kiddies) who invented leet-speak, but being as pretty much all of them have gone whitehat now, I'm guessing they don't really have the need for it.
A previous girlfriend used to be that way. I don't think it had anything to do with comfort or security. She was just playing.
