Men who are more sexually active in their 20s and 30s may run a higher risk of prostate cancer, research suggests.

The Nottingham University study quizzed 800 men on how often they had sex or masturbated.

Those who were most active while younger had more chance of developing cancer later in life.

The researchers said higher levels of sex hormones could lead to a bigger sex drive and the cancer, the journal BJU International reported.[/b]
Source.

And there was me thinking it helped hold off prostate cancer.

I hate these correlation studies.

If they're supposing the main cause for the findings they are seeing lies in the endocrine system then it really has nothing to do with sexual activity, or even necessarily sex drive. However infection with STDs has been shown to correlate with increased risk for developing prostate cancer, with other factors being controlled for, so maybe they are counting on that as well. Not ejaculating at all, or doing so very infrequently, has been correlated pretty well with testicular and prostate cancer morbidity though. This doesn't exactly confound these studies though because not getting off often can lead to higher testosterone production.

Studies a year or two ago showed that frequent masturbation was thought to prevent prostate cancer. As for the reasoning behind this, I don't know.

Seems like it'd be the same thing; use of sexual organs should prevent the turn to cancer, but this is countered by that new study. Sometimes it just seems like scientists and researchers like to sit around and play games with each other, or at least with society.

Researcher 1: Hey, I'm going to make up some study next week, and then two months later you counter it.
Researcher 2: Ooh, ooh, I know! Let's make it about cancer and sex... Those two things are riotously funny to shock and scare people about.
Researcher 1: Oh, we're so bad and funny.
Researcher 2: Ah-hahahahaha.
Researcher 1: Now excuse me while I go hang myself.

New study finds that one out of two researchers prone to commit suicide out of boredom.

Early prevention is bullshit. Prostate cancer is one of the least-deadly and slowest-growing kinds of cancers out there. Often it takes 15 years to die from it once it's been diagnosed and procedures meant to avert damage from the disease often wind up causing more damage than the cancer would have. Worry about other stuff first, like colon cancer.
Statistics are like prisoners, torture them long enough and they'll tell you whatever you want to hear.

lol, I don't think that's quite it though, I think that you can just find tons of correlations in something as sloppy as a biological system

that being said, correlation studies where they don't give you the value of the correlation or the z score of proportional relevance in the article are impossible to draw anything from

But Tim, every time I get drunk my car winds up in a lake.

Surely there's a correlation?

This just in: Men grossly understate the amounts of times they've had sex and/or masturbated when they were younger.

Are they serious? Only 60% say that they've engaged in sexual activity 12 times or more in a month?

Even when ive had a girlfriend I may not have gotten in 12 days of sex in a month...

But if you count the 4 romps in 12 hours as 4 instead of 1, then that may be a different story.
