As said by Ret, you need to compromise. Personally, I have a high sex drive as well so I know the "aggravation" of being turned down. Thing is, people have the ability to masturbate.
A big thing is how often you want to have sex. It changes how the compromise is.
A nice talk should allow things to be worked out. If not, then he may not full understand your situation. Regardless, conversation is required here.
Him getting mad about it is just ridiculous. The fact that you told him it hurts at times should have told him you may need more time between sex. You may really need to explain this to him.
Not knowing you or him, I can only offer some generic ideas.
One option could be that he masturbates with you in the room. Even mutual masturbation can be an option. I would think it would be a rather great emotional connection for the both of you.
