    Attention Dykes, Fags and Mutants...

    Regardless of politics, homosexuality is what it is: a behavioral pattern associated with what, by any reasonable standard, must be regarded as an unacceptable prevalence of medical and emotional illness.

    So says one of the founders of NARTH, the National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality, an organisation designed to help people rid themselves of unwanted homosexual thoughts.

    This to me holds great parallels with X-Men, if you'll forgive the slightly crass comparison of mutants and homosexuals. Two schools of thought are held by mutants both good and evil with regards to a potential cure, and generally these schools are dictated by the mutant's background. If we look at one such as Rogue, who feels that she cannot ever be physically close with those she loves because of her 'mutation', it's easy to understand why she wants her powers taken away. A teenager who has grown up in an environment where homosexuality is highly frowned upon, and is in fact very rare, might feel exactly the same way, and head to a place such as this.

    On the other side, you have the Magnetos and the Ian McKellens of the world, who believe that their 'mutations' are perfectly natural, not things to be hidden from those ignorant masses who do not understand the nature of their lives. These will of course frown upon such organisations as NARTH.

    Where do you stand?

    I don't think homosexuality is a "disease" that can be cured. I personally think its stupid that this much attention is focused on people's sexuality and "othering" people.

    What i find interesting about your comparison is that you cannot forget that the X-men consisted of people who can blend into society. Yes there are a few that stand out more than others but the majority blend in and are encouraged to do so. Magneto and his crew cannot blend in because they are extremely flamboyant (for lack of better words). Their mutation is extremely obvious. A lot of them never had the option to hide their mutation so of course they will stand by their mutations being natural.

    If i remember correctly Magneto was also a Holocaust survivor and worried about Mutants being exterminated like his peoples. Bring it back to sexuality. Exactly what are you going to do with all the gays when you decide it needs to be unlawful to have a sexual preference.

    Oh and i read an interesting article yesterday on how plastic chemicals feminise boys.

    It should be about choice but i was thinking about how in America we still have laws outlawing homosexual acts in many states and the shit about gay marriage which extends to many other aspects of ones life. Pretty much things go along the lines of we prefer for you to not be gay but if you are you should try a little harder to not to be gay maybe then you will be granted similar rights as non gays. Im ranting because im exhausted. Do i make somewhat sense or do you actually need me to clarify?

    I must admit I'm confused about the point/question you're trying to ask, Tri. I don't really consider myself a mutant so.. er.. yeah? Oh, and my homosexual thoughts are very much wanted. So I'd never enroll in an organization like that.

    True dat. ButI was just making the point that even if a black guy goes and changes their skin and face, they're still a black person. Just because a gay person learns some mental tricks for surpressing their gay thoughts, it doesn't mean they're not who they are.

    Okay, well say you go to one of these places because your family or your support group or whatever has convinced you that being gay is undesireable. How are they going to actually change your sexuality? I'm sure they could change your reactions to your homosexual impulses but I think it would take years of dedicated mind-training to come anywhere near reaching a state of full hetrosexuality.

    How much work do you think it would take to make you gay? I know it would take rather a lot before I was 100% gay-as-you-like. Not only would you have to make it so that I found men attractive, but I'd also have to find women unattractive. That's a LOT of work.

    You basically have to rid the person of their 'bad thoughts' and then reprogram their brain with 'good thoughts' which many people have tried to do in the past (think, Soviet/CIA brainwashing) but to no avail.

    The image i have in my head of one of these 'cured' individuals is this:-

    'Previously' gay man walks down the street and sees a particularly handsome guy. His first instinct is to think 'he's hot' and then he has to go through some sort of control exercise to supress that thought because it's 'bad'. Now, he may get very good at surpressing those thoughts and convincing himself that he's straight but that doesn't mean that he is.

    If people's sexualities could be changed like that then surely we could just send paedophiles and the like to institutions where they come out not wanting to touch kids after all.

    Well yes but to be honest, I wouldn't really trust the people saying they've been 'cured'. In order to go to one of those places in the first place you must be quite vulnerable or under a great deal of pressure. Sexuality is such a huge part of the human psyche that I simply don't believe that you can completely change it. Governments have poured millions into researching brainwashing techniques and nobody's gotten any worthwhile results.

    The website for NARTH just reads like a textbook of bullshit. Have you read this interview? Nicolosi Interview with Former Gay Activist Michael Glatze This guy has gone from a gay-activist to talking about how he sympahthises with Sarah Palin!!! It seems he's not only gone through a gay-straight transition but from a liberal-conservative one too!

    After going through that website it's clear that they're not concerned with stopping someone from being homosexual at all. They just teach people techniques to control homosexual thoughts.

    I think the best analogy I can come up with for this is something like Alcoholics Anonymous or any drug therapy. The 'patient' is an addict, and will be for the rest of their lives. The program is concerned with preventing them from indulging in their addiction. NARTH is the same thing but for gay people.

    Just navigating their website made me feel dirty.

    I have the same position as Brew. I think all the so-called ex-gays are either frauds or still suppressing their urges. Hell, there's people like Larry Craig who we all thought were raging anti-gay bigot family values guys but were really just self-loathing. Self-loathing can make people do crazy things to compensate and there's none more zealous than a convert.
