Saving when you are a teen is pointless unless you are ridiculously loaded ... like pulling in more than 2k/month, and here is why:

Money has a utility factor... how much happiness it brings you.

In your teenage years, what makes you happy?? Having enough cash to go out to the bars, go to a movie, buy a shirt or a pair of pants... yes??? You dont need to buy a frigging car to enjoy yourself.

Whereas when you are 25+, enjoying your money takes much more. Buying a nice place, a new car, expensive electronics, etc.

When you're young, spend your money; you can be happy for 200 dollars a month, whereas when you're an adult, it would take you over 2000 dollars a month to enjoy that same level of happiness.

Basically, we're working on economies of scale here. Young folks have less money in their economy, the things that make them happy are less expensive, saving this lesser amount of money will not be worth the enjoyment you miss out on by saving an amount of money that will become trivial when you get a real job and are pulling 40k+ a year.

Awesome Catter. Substitute the thrill of setting goals and working to achieve them for the happiness of amusements and diversions.

    That`s beautiful, man.

Catter has a point. The amount a low-income teen could save is not worth the fun you will miss out on as a result, because when you reach adulthood the amount saved will be trival by your adulthood standards.

Putting away a large chunk of the money you have as a teen, sacrificing this potential happiness it could bring you, just to realize later in life that it wasnt worth it, because the years of saving you did as a teen equate to a couple weeks of paychecks when you get out into the real world.

Im all for setting goals, but saving money, that in your younger years is a significant chunk of your finances, only to see it dwindle from 20% of your income to 2% of your new income isnt my idea of a "thrill"

Eh, call me old fashioned. I always liked the idea of not depending on the `rent for everything.

But hey, if someone out there is happy with their allowance... well that too is a beautiful thing. It takes all kinds to make this crazy world.

I want to find a way to make money off of `em.

I must, say I have failed miserably at this, walahi I've been spending loads on friends, family and myself, went on a shopping spree and had a party, so this plan of yours might not be for me.. and I bought ridiculously expensive phat pharms, and chanel and christian dior make up, yes i'm a label whore, need to reduce that. Not to mention all the money i spent just walking around, i'm so not a saver.

locke come back so you can give me some advice and keep me grounded,
I will not become the cold hard determined rich bitch of a career women that i want to be with the little bit of the help i get out of this. Actually i just want to be able to help my family as much as they have helped me, and trust me, i have a lot of family.
    hmm.. i lack ambition.
