I was the skinny kid all through high school. My senior year I started to gain weight and graduated at 180 lbs at 6' tall. Not too bad. As time went on I steadily gained more and more weight and after I got out of the military I went from 200 to 240 over the next ten years. My doctor (brain surgeon that he is.) said I should weigh about 170 for my height. Holy skinny fukker Batman. My muscle structure alone would not support that weight theory.
Last year I decided to do something about it. I stopped eating all fast food. By that I mean BK, Micky-Dees, and KFC. I will go to Pizza Slut occasionally and I still eat from Sub-Way a few times a month.
I now weigh 216lbs and am still trying to get to my target of 210 with an ultimate goal of 200.
The point being is that diet and excercise really do work. Get out there and get active if you can. Do something. 100 years ago farming families ate anything and everything they could get their mitts on, yet they were still pretty healthy. That's because they worked 14-18 hours every single day if not more. Hard physical work. They would laugh at the thought of going to a gym to work out nowadays.
