The Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, has stepped into the controversy between religious fundamentalists and scientists by saying that he does not believe that creationism - the Bible-based account of the origins of the world - should be taught in schools.

Giving his first, wide-ranging, interview at Lambeth Palace, the archbishop was emphatic in his criticism of creationism being taught in the classroom, as is happening in two city academies founded by the evangelical Christian businessman Sir Peter Vardy and several other schools.[/b]
I really like this bloke, i can't remember hearing of him doing anything that i particularly disagree with/think is a bad thing.

He's a bit of a populist. What's next? 'Ab of C says: don't really worry about doing all that stuff in the bible, it's optional!'

Heh, They all live like it, but nobody had better SAY it.

Nah, he's right, creationism shouldn't be taught in schools, unless it's in a religious studies class of course. Anyone with half a brain can see that whether they're religious or not, surely.

It's like two people debating what colour Santa's coat is. One says it's Green, the other says it's Blue. You're sure it's Red, but it doesn't matter anyway because he doesn't exist.

This is surprising coming from somebody who appears on this side of the Atlantic to be a religious conservative -- opposition to homosexuality and all that.

Creationism deserves mention in schools as follows: "There are many religious theories as to the creation of the universe, the planet, and life. We will not be examining any of them; instead, we will look at the scientific evidence available to us."

If you went about teaching Creationism in schools you'd never cover any scientific stuff. You've got the Christian/Jewish creation, Islamic, Hindu, Bddhist, Sikh etc..

But of course, it's not as if these pro-crearionists are actually calling for a real educational outlook on creationsism. They simply want to force the Christian version of Creationism down kid's throats.
The broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying. These people know only too well how to use falsehood for the basest purposes... Adolf Hitler
