A new study of US prisons has found that numbers of people in jail are at an all-time high, with more than 1% of the adult population behind bars.

The Pew Center report calls the US the global leader in the rate at which it imprisons its citizens. Over 2.3 million people were being held this year, it said - far ahead of other countries with large prison populations like China, Russia and Iran.

The report called for fewer low-risk offenders to be sent to jail. It claims that the growing prison population "is saddling cash-strapped states with soaring costs they can ill afford, and failing to have a clear impact either on recidivism or overall crime".

With 750 inmates per 100,000 people, imprisonment cost the 50 states more than $49bn last year, up from less than $11bn 20 years earlier.

The rate of increase for prison costs was found to be six times greater than for higher education spending.

According to the Pew Center study, the higher rates of incarceration did not reflect a similar increase in crime, or in population, but tougher sentencing measures. Some states, though, such as Texas and Kansas, have acted to slow their prison population growth, with greater use of community supervision for lower-risk offenders, and sanctions other than prison for minor probation and parole violations.

The numbers were "especially startling", according to the Pew Center report, for some groups in the population.

"While one in 30 men between the ages of 20 and 34 is behind bars, for black males in that age group the figure is one in nine."

The total of 2.3 million adults held in prison - or one in every 99.1 adults - puts the US far head of other countries. China, with its far greater population, has 1.5 million people behind bars, and Russia has 890,000.

RATES OF INCARCERATION
USA: 750 prisoners per 100,000 people
South Africa: 341 per 100,000
Iran: 222 per 100,000
China: 119 per 100,000[/b]
That's actually really fucked. I mean, 1% of the population is a fuck-load of people. And 1 in 9 black men aged 20-34 in prison!!! Incredibly, incredibly fucked. What does it say about the way America is run when there's so many people sitting in jail? I'm pretty sure that there's no reason to suggest that American people are somehow more susceptible for a life of crime and it's certainly not something you could call a 'national condition'. So what, is it the people in charge that are making stupid decisions that leads to all these people being in jail??? Why is it so fucked up????

Freedom!!!! Freedom!!!! Freeeeeedom!!! Liberty!!!! Liberty!!!! seem to be the key words for any US politician, so why are there more people being totally denied freedom and liberty in America than anywhere else in the world???
The broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying. These people know only too well how to use falsehood for the basest purposes... Adolf Hitler

The U.S. also is among the world leaders in capital punishment. According to Amnesty International, its 53 executions in 2006 were exceeded only by China, Iran, Pakistan, Iraq and Sudan.[/b]

Also 1 in 3 black men will be incarcerated at some point in their lives.

The police and the justice system in the US is just not a sevent of the people. It is an organism on to itself.

That's fucking ridiculous. One in one hundred. Holy crap. A lot of it is because of those three strikes laws. Also the bullshit drug 'crimes'.

What a horrendous waste of money. Hell we could spend that money on day care and education for youth and change those numbers around within a single generation.

Cripes.

one of my best friends is currently serving 3yrs in prison for a bulllllllllshit "crime"... the states attourney told him to not even bother with hiring an attourney because there was no way he'd be convicted. -charged with aggravated assault on an officer.

the judge happened to be the officer's uncle. conflict of intrests, much?

and my friend believed them, figured since he didn't DO anything, they'd end up dismissing the case. HAH! what a laugh.

so now he rots in jail, partially for his own naiivety.. for a bogus charge. the kid RAN from the cops because he had reefer on him. never EVER hit the guy. they pressed charges on an easy target, since he had a juvi record.

it's all business. i'm going to see him in a couple weeks, that should be interesting. never visited a prison before. i expect to bawl my eyes out.

fuck that bullshit. it's all a fucking business. and this kid is going to be royally headfucked when he gets out. my friend is way too sensitive for that shit. i'm seriously scared for him.

edit- if any of you remember mikuriel... it's his 'roommate'. and if you remember mik, you remember how hung up he gets on govt conspiracies. that kid is ROLLING in misery these days. what a suckfest.

I think it stems from three sources, one it that the criminal justice system is utterly flawed, particularly along racial lines
2. we continue to perputate policy that put black boys in situations of poverty, we've conciouslly made the decision not to educate them as well as we do white suburban kids, and we expect them to be as successful as their peers.
3. This is the fucking USA, violence is our solution to everything, and if your a real american you use a gun to do it.

Catter, you have to admit with numbers like that it's a systemic issue. One in one hundred doesn't just point to the person but instead to the system.

I myself would be much happier seeing my tax money going to something constructive - like rehabilitation, prevention etc.

yes, that's what i meant. he's a wonderful person, as is our friend. i spoke with him the other night and we both wound up in tears, 400 miles apart. it's not easy, and it's certainly not right.
but fuck you three times sideways ANYWAYZ!1!

catter, i certainly don't expect you to sympathize with the reality of this situation, not to mention countless others: it's profitable to put people into prison. my friend now """costs""" close to 30g a year. he's of greater value behind bars than he is working a crap min wage job buffetted with food stamps.
"it's simple economics, son- i don't understand it at all."

this isn't a race matter, either. i suppose it boils down to class in this case.

AND as ruby reminded me, there's something like 1% of the prisons in the us with higher education and rehab programs. the reality is that we just lock people up long enough to.... (you tell me)... then release them back into public life, without the skills necesarry to get a job and work with society. thus, they turn around and sell drugs/ their body/ whatever got them there in the first place... and they wind up back behind bars. that 3 strike rule? i saw an interview of an inmate who'd just finished serving time on her 2nd, and figured on prostituting and returning since she had no means of supporting herself realistically and has been in prison most of her life. so why not just live there? sad.

You forgot don't be black and near a place where a crime was commited.

Or maybe it's just that 1/3rd of all black men really do hit women steal and do drugs

The problem with the US justice system is not only that it is ridiculously harsh, that probation is retarded the way it is set up now (a criminal is not dangerous enough to be locked up but if he fails a drug test for pot he is?), but that it is enforced all lopsidedly. Things a subruban kids will get a slap on the wrist for someone from the inner city will go to jail for 2 years for. This is true even of violent crime. My brother got jumped by 5 kids from a nieghboring rich suburb and they got a little unmonitered probation. This emo kid from my highschool got jumped by a bunch of black kids and they all went to prison. Even one who only threatened the kid and never laid a hand on him.

You can also see it in how they'll try a 17 yearold rich kids as a child but try to give a poor minority the death penalty at 14.

2.3 mill in prison, far out. Thats over half the population of New Zealand, thats like having the whole South island of NZ as a prison.

So whats the statitics for what type of crime is committed in percentage wise. Like how many are in prison for drugs, rape, peadophile, murder, drunk driving, stealing etc.
Would be interesting to know how many people are in prison for petty crimes and how many for serious crimes and how many are back in prison for repeat offending.
