Big increases in duty on alcohol and high-polluting cars have been announced by Chancellor Alistair Darling.

In his first Budget he put 4p on a pint of beer, 14p on a bottle of wine and 55p on a bottle of spirits. Duty on a packet of cigarettes is up 11p.

He announced higher road tax for the most polluting cars but delayed for six months a 2p rise in fuel duty.

Mr Darling, who insisted the UK could "weather economic storms", also increased winter fuel payments.[/b]
****. So there we have it, the people who only harm themselves (smokers, and yes, they do now only harm themselves, being as they have to stand outside if they want to smoke) are taxed more than the people who are destroying the environment for everyone.

Full story is available here, where it shows a list of lots and lots of other slight monetary changes, but shown above are the important ones. STILL no fat tax.

There's an extra £2billion to go and kill foreigners in their homes though. Great work Darling!
The broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying. These people know only too well how to use falsehood for the basest purposes... Adolf Hitler

I dunno if this is anything to do with taxation, but petrol has gone up by about 20p a litre in the last 6 months (i was furious first time i filled up the car, that's nearly an extra £10 for every tank) and road tax has been pretty much revolutionised in the last few years, us drivers are still getting taxed plenty. just not in this instance.

wait, wtf, i never noticed he was chancellor now. mental.
