    Education cuts

I don't know about other states or counties but the county I work in is taking major cuts to education. They are talking about furloughs, firing teachers, making class sizes bigger, etc.
They use a forumla based on filed income taxes and use that to distribute the money for schools.
The county I work in has a lot of illegal immigrants. Now I don't lean one way or the other about that. The law says children will be educated regardless of their status. If they are here legally or illegally we cannot turn them away, that is fine by me. Those children will eventually grow up, get legal status and help contribute.
However, people here illegally work day jobs and do not pay taxes. How can you not figure that in when you are talking about state funding for education.
By 2014, unless Obama changes things, all children are expected to score proficient on state tests. In affluent areas they will struggle to do that. We are currently looking for a home in the nicer areas and those schools hit 98 and 99% proficiency. These kids are getting the extra help they need. I work in a area that has a high degree of poverty. Last year we scored 70 and 68% proficency on the math and reading test as a school. These kids do not get the help they need at home, so it is all about what they get at school.
How do you cut teacher jobs and expect that not to impact student acheivement? They are cutting a position called parent liason. We have an extremely large spanish speaking population. These parent liasons are interpreters so that these parents can be involved. Without those positions things will get harder for those familes.
I just don't understand how when as a nation we are pushing to compete with countries like japan, korea, etc in education yet we are not making it our priority.

And they wonder why America's education ranking are so awful. Cutting education is always a bad idea.

Is this part of why they're pushing the census so hard?

I just put Isabelle in a private school (for preschool, instead of daycare). It's expensive. We pay $615 per month, and that's with a 10% discount since I work where I do. This particular school goes through 2nd grade. Her dad wants to pull her out and put her in public school when she is old enough for public school. But I don't really want to. I'm even considering moving her to another private school after 2nd grade. At this point, I can afford it, so why not? I haven't been able to think of any negatives to having her in private school.

It's too bad that kids can't get the same education no matter where they live. I'm thinking about moving and I'm looking at areas based on the school. I'm even willing to sacrifice certain things in my home to be in a better area for school. Of all places to cut costs....

Education should be top of the list of priorities. It's shameful that there are going to be cuts like this. Ah well, just leave everything to yet another generation of privately-educated elites.....
The broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying. These people know only too well how to use falsehood for the basest purposes... Adolf Hitler

I actually haven't even considered how the budget cuts have been affecting primary and secondary education systems. I have been so busy being angry with how my education is affected. The first time i became aware of the bad shit was when one of my history courses tripled in size. The furloughs suck but whats worse is the hiring freezes. There are also been proposed tuition increase when we are suppose to be in a tuition freeze.

I must agree with all that everyone has said here. I am thankful my children have finished their schooling. Today schools are an example of what has gone wrong with our society in general. Teachers are not well paid for all they are expected to be and do. Teach, police, pay for extras out of their own pockets, and in many cases they are expected to babysit for working parents.

I believe some teachers need to receive hazzard pay. With all the disrespect in some classes it is no wonder children are graduating high school and are unable to read or write a proper sentence.

Yes, and it all boils down to lack of funds for school and teachers. In present times, when the ecconomy is a hurting unit, it does seem schools and education take a back burner when the bucks are distributed. There must be a clever group of people who could come up with some viable solutions. School lotteries, where 100% of money goes to education and teacher's pay. City business people donating goods and services for raffels. Clever projects that raise money. Parent volunters, aiding teachers in class. Retired people who might offer a service to lighten a teachers load.
If people are not happy with the cuts , then work together and come up with some solutions for their communities. On a large scale this might not be the way to go, but city by city and town by town, there must be a way to supplemnt government fund alotments. Then again, maybe I am just a hot air dreamer?? Looking and gleening what other countries do might be another option.

Oh yeah because it worked SO well when we ended up with Tony Blair, George W. Bush and now David Cameron
