Gore Blasts Bush Space Plan, Says Earth Neglected
    Thu January 15, 2004 04:35 PM ET

    By Nichola Groom
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore scoffed at President Bush's plan to send astronauts to the moon and Mars and said Bush was a "moral coward" for ignoring global environmental threats.

Speaking at an event sponsored by political advocacy groups MoveOn.org and Environment2004, Gore said Bush's record on the environment routinely puts the wishes of the coal, oil, utility and mining industries ahead of public interests.

"Instead of spending enormous sums of money on an unimaginative and retread effort to make a tiny portion of the moon habitable for a handful of people, we should focus instead on a massive effort to ensure that the Earth is habitable for future generations," Gore said to a cheering Manhattan crowd.

The speech is one of a series Gore, who served two terms as vice president under President Bill Clinton, has made criticizing Bush's handling of the war in Iraq, the economy, and other issues. Gore lost to Bush in the 2000 election after winning the popular vote and has ruled out a rematch in 2004.

On Wednesday, Bush announced plans to send humans back to the moon as early as 2015 and eventually to Mars -- an initiative critics derided as motivated by election-year politics that could cost hundreds of billions of dollars. His dad, former President George Bush, proposed in 1989 to send humans back to the moon and on to Mars, but that idea went nowhere.

Gore accused Bush of reneging on environmental promises made while campaigning for the White House, saying Bush's "seemingly heartfelt declaration" that he was concerned about global warming and the environment was just lip service.

"While President Bush likes to project an image of strength and courage, the truth is that in the presence of his large financial contributors he is a moral coward -- so weak that he seldom, if ever, says 'No' to anything that they want to do," Gore said.

In particular, Gore took aim at Bush's "Clear Skies" bill, which limits emissions of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and mercury but fails to regulate emissions of carbon dioxide, which is believed to contribute to global warming.

He also criticized Bush's so-called "Healthy Forest" initiative, which the White House said would reduce the risk of forest wildfires but which environmental groups said promoted logging at the expense of environmental protection.

According to Gore, such policies underscore Bush's goal of satisfying the interests of large industrial corporations in return for hefty campaign contributions.

"It seems at times as if the Bush-Cheney Administration is wholly owned by the coal, oil, utility and mining companies," he said.

While environmental issues dominated the speech, Gore still criticized Bush's handling of foreign policy, saying he has "caused America to be seen by the other nations of the world as showing disdain for the international community."

um. it's january 15, dead center into winter. It's not like it's going to be sunshine and 80.

Global mean surface temperatures have increased 0.5-1.0°F since the late 19th century. The 20th century&#39;s 10 warmest years all occurred in the last 15 years of the century. Of these, 1998 was the warmest year on record. The snow cover in the Northern Hemisphere and floating ice in the Arctic Ocean have decreased. Globally, sea level has risen 4-8 inches over the past century. Worldwide precipitation over land has increased by about one percent. The frequency of extreme rainfall events has increased throughout much of the United States.[/b]
    <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
Increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases are likely to accelerate the rate of climate change. Scientists expect that the average global surface temperature could rise 1-4.5°F (0.6-2.5°C) in the next fifty years, and 2.2-10°F (1.4-5.8°C) in the next century, with significant regional variation. Evaporation will increase as the climate warms, which will increase average global precipitation. Soil moisture is likely to decline in many regions, and intense rainstorms are likely to become more frequent. Sea level is likely to rise two feet along most of the U.S. coast[/b]

I am no political guru by any means. But I always did, and still do, like Gore better than Bush. I was so pissed when he lost.

The drastic temperature changes we have been feeling in the last few months, from day to day, is a sign of problems in our environment.

For someone who has an obscure element from the periodic table as a screen name, you have an embarrassing lack of knowledge regarding science. Please don&#39;t discuss science on the boards again.
    Thank you!

As for Gore... he&#39;s written the most moving, impressive speeches of anyone in the last 2 years. I love listening to him speak. While Clinton may be the better orator, Gore is far superior at putting together a logical argument that coherently states his case. I so wish he were president right now.

The reason things are getting colder is due to the cold air masses from the poles being pushed toward the equator.

    This will change in time.

By then a chunk of iceberg the size of Rhode Island will have dropped into the ocean, raising sea level by 20 feet.

I won&#39;t get into the Bush-Gore debate because that&#39;s not what this thread was about.

My feeling is this: We &#39;went&#39; to the moon in 1970 right? I am lost as to why it is going to take us almost 50 years to go back to a place we have supposedly already been. I realize that many many expirements have been performed in space while orbiting the Earth, but it seems that we are better at losing shuttles than Moon exploration. It should&#39;nt even be a challenge to get back to the moon IF we have already been there. They supposedly did it when space ships were considered primitive by today&#39;s standards. Now we have an aging shuttle fleet that is to be retired by 2010 so we can build a space station on the moon that we really can&#39;t afford, and for what? So we can send people on a 2+ year round trip mission to Mars? Well, I suppose it will make for interesting news coverage when there are astronauts trapped on the red planet and can&#39;t get back home. Maybe then we can set our sights on Jupiter. Whatever.

But not all scientists agree what is causing global warming. There is a huge debate in the scientific community right now as to whether we are experiencing this warming effect due to humans or because of a natural cycle that the Earth has been through many many times. In the end, the Earth isn&#39;t going to give a fuck if it gets as hot as the Sun or as cold as Pluto. It&#39;s only us self-interested humans that really care.

Maybe...we&#39;ve never been there before and it was a super great big conspiracy... hehehe

And this is what I have to say...take it with a grain of salt.

Funny how 3 years into a presidency of the U.S. one man can be blamed for all the Earth&#39;s problems. If ANYONE else was in there we all know these problems would be non-existent right? I mean I never heard of global warming, ozone layer depletion, smog, greenhouse gasses, pollution, spotted white owls, or atlantic salmon when Clinton was president. I did hear a ton about semen stains on blue dresses though, and cigars being stuck in most innapropriate places. I guess one wouldn&#39;t have time to destroy the Earth when one is spending all one&#39;s time fucking his overweight intern. Hmmmmm...

I imagine that had a lot to do with the fact that the right-wing had nothing else to go on.

I mean, if you can&#39;t tarnish a man&#39;s policies, all you can do is tarnish the man.

And they failed, and fuck them for trying.

It was especially gratifying to see Newt Gingrich&#39;s bulbous ass blubbering around as he resigned after word got out about his tryst.

And incidentally, three years into a presidency is a hell of a lot of time to do some damage to the earth, which Bush has done by managing to find ways around a lot of legislation Clinton passed in order to do something to stave off the destruction. There&#39;s plenty of trees being cut down right now thanks to him.

Can&#39;t really argue with anything else you said, but trees grow back my friend. That&#39;s why they are called America&#39;s renewable resource. The problem is that as humans with short life spans we look at everything in such short time frames. Yes it does take time for a tree to grow into maturity, but with sustainable forestry, there is NO reason why we shouldn&#39;t harvest the wood for the many uses it offers. However you can do a little research and see what happens when old growth forests are left alone. One spark and poof, a lot more timber is lost to fire than to loggers. Of course, as with anything else moderation is key and not cutting more than what the forest can handle is what needs to happen.
