I'm assuming you've all heard about this, 3 japanese civilians (2 journo's not sure what the 3rd is) have been kidnapped by 'the resistance', who threaten to burn them alive unless Japan withdraws all of its personell within 72 hours. The Japanese government has said that it will not pull it's troops.

What do you think will be the outcome? the 72 hours is creeping up... i'm guessing there'll be a mission to try and get them out, which will probably end up with all 3 dead and most of the others. Not a very cool situation

I actually wasnt aware of this

Dont be so sure that any mission will fail, the guys that go in for these things are very highly skilled and may well succeed in getting them out alive. Heres to optimism at least. It was a good plan of the so-called "resistance", given the current situation in Japan, it was a battle to get the troops into Iraq in the first place and there was a lot of opposition. My guess is that theres going to be political chaos in Japan if this goes down badly.

Lets hope this isnt as bad as it could be.

Japan's pacifist constitution is really going to be tested now that you think about it. Many people think that their involvement in Iraq by itself has violated the constitution, and even before that there was a lot of talk about them re-arming themselves to protect themselves from escalating North Korea issues - apparently the government has been pushing for major amendments.

    Let's hope the hostages survive

Like I said, if it goes badly the public backlash against the Japanese government is going to be huge. And with Japans history of changing leaders like it changes pants, im sure the bigwigs are biting their nails right now.

You are right Gosu, and I don't think there is really any way it could go well, excepting a miraculous rescue, which to be honest I never even considered before you said that. Japanese troops do not need to be there, I think they should just get out. And I also am extremely surprised the Japanese government is refusing the demands. What sort of government just lets its own citizens be killed? Especially somewhere they should not be in the first place.

Perhaps because they are private citizens there on their own free will?

Nevertheless I wouldn't doubt the coalition forces' ability to get these three people out. We have numerous special forces at our disposal which we can use against whoever has taken the hostages. I doubt that the hostage-takers are that "elite" anyways. It could be done, we'll just have to see.

I think they were covering the war for Japanese media, but still it isn't the point. It doesn't matter if they are private citizens, they could die by the actions of Japanese leaders and they should accept some responsibilty for their deaths. Not good deaths either, burning or something equally bad. I would not want to deal with that.

You mean one that's had their common sense gland removed.

The only reason to stand firm against these demands would be if there was something to be gained. There isn't anything to be gained. the troops should be pulled out anyway. Maybe I am diverting too much.

The American Government are terrorists in the eyes of millions. Should all negotiations with America by all concerned cease because of this label?

No... the American government cannot be "terrorists", because terrorists generally aren't organized along the lines of a government.

We are more along the lines of a halfassed imperial power.

So by that logic Saddam was not a terrorist?

Let's not forget the fact that (supposedly) they don't know who or where these hostage takers are.

The worst part of it is that the Japanese aren't there to fight. They're peacekeepers. I can't understand why they're so concerned that Japan gets out....

Is it to prove that they still have some power?
