didn't have the time to read the whole post. but look into "dream herb". scientific name calea zac.........something. dramaticaly increases dream recollection, vividness, and possibility of lucidity.
Since the dawn of man exploration has occured in the pysical realm. Science and reiligion have blended in many ascpects but the mysterys of the Human brain and Human experience and the Truth have long be sought after by science to no avail.
Many using chemicals to alter their concious have had spiritual awakenings and meaningful, sometimes life changing experiences under the effect of psychoactives. One can alter their concious in similar ways though using pure will power or certain low doses of chemicals and herbs.
The Lucid Dream, or Travel to the Astral Plane while in a state of unconciouness is one way to envoke the deeply spirtual or envoke some really awesome experiences without chemical ivolvement. Many people don't belive they can control their dreams though or don't dream often and don't think that the frequency of dreams can be altered. This is completely untrue. Many techniques can be used to master the art of the lucid dream and increase the frequency of dreams and your abilities to remember dreams with greater clarity.
1 Have a dream journal . This is the best way to increase the frequency of dreams and your memory of a dream. Write down every aspect of a dream as soon as you awaken, don't wait, keep it right near your bed, mine is under my pillow.
2. Question if you are awake several times a day just look around, ask if you're awake, recognize sighns that mean you are not dreaming. Do this throughout your day and when you dream it will be easier to realize you are dreaming and commence with a lucid dream.
3. Don't panic or get excited when you realize you are dreaming this is a good way to wake up right away. Just relax, try to do somthing in you dream, shape you dream, try flying, somthing you've wanted to do for a while. I would recomend against having sex in your dreams right away because that tends to wake you up. I normaly smoke a bowl of mystic "dream herb" in my dream that I convince myself will help me commune with spirits, stupid I know but I get very high and euphoric in my dream and have experience out of body experiences from this technique.
4. Don't freak out at sleep paralysis or awakening with double vision or the spins this happens some times. You can't move, you wake up with some minor hallucinations, you might have a shock run through your body, or you might feel kind of drunk/high waking up with spins and such. You're brain will catch up in a second, have no worries. Meditation and REM sleep (the type in which you dream) has been shown to cause no health problems)
Some herbs and drugs can enchance lucid dreams and dreams, some commonly used safe ones are salvia officialis , calea, melatonin, valaerian, dextromethorphan HBr (in low doses, around 30mgs)
Another intersting thing to do while trying to sleep is to keep your mind going while you sleep. You can stay concious while alseep. This takes a lot of work. You will begin to breath deeply, you will lose feeling in your body but become hyper aware of your heart beat and breathing but unable to control you breathing at all or wake up easily. This can be scary sometimes but with enough effort you can normaly wake yourself up.
Meditation is an often very misunderstood practice. Meditation is not always sitting cross legged and making your mind go blank. It is merly altering one's concious using concentration. You can meditate in any position. Noise is generaly to be avoided but I find the sound of a fan, the shower, or sometimes music, to be very helpfull.
There are lots of things to do while meditating. You can focus on your body, eventualy you can feel your heart beat, feel the organs moving inside you and even assert control over them a bit.
You can also search your mind, ease yourself into emotions, try to clear it, or prehaps fill it with a certain though, prehaps release great elation and euphoria, these are all possible.
Just keep at meditation and you will likely find things that work, don't worry if it doesn't work at first.

ok that's just a begining post if no one had done it, if people are already into this I would love to hear input. I'll post some of my experiences with Lucid dreams, meditations, and OEBs as well as those mystical experiences using substance later if anyone is interested.

yeah I breifly mention calea in passing, it really works wonders, I know many who are huge fans, I tend to try to keep my dreaming substance free
Main reason I quit smoking marijuana was that it suppressed my dreams.

oh forgot to add, kava kava, smoking sativa or smoking opium in low amounts can often add a lot to a meditation session

Sounds cool.

Have you smoked sage? not cooking sage, this herb that makes you trip out and hallucinate? do you know anything about that?
I smoked it once on my birthday last year, and it was insane.
'Cause I'm that fool that broke the key- I'm unlockable so don't check me- I got weight on my shoulders and things on my mind- The sky is falling and I'm falling behind... No shame in my game just par for the path- I try to hone my craft because at hand's the task- But I find I'm not playing with a full deck- I'm up to my neck like Toulouse Lautrec
Hmm, certainly couldn't be the household herb Sage. Though the herb commonly known as sage is used in many shamanistic rituals it holds no pyscoactive properties. It could have been the legal psycoactive Salvia Dinvinorum, it's commonly used and it sometimes called sage.
I know that nutmeg in higher doses can be quite the potent psycoactive, as can Catnip when smoke.
I'm interested if anyone knows a lot about meditation. I've read a lot about theta brain waves and have guessed that stimulation of the sigma and pcp2 and 3 receptors is most likely aparent but have been unable to find any information on the actual brain chemistry of meditation.

right, right, it's Salvia's second cousin or something. Salvia didn't do anything for me at all tho. Sage made me think I was floating in black space searching thru a puffy yellow filing cabinet for about 20 seconds after I hit the bong. Then I was just out of it and dizzy and fucked up. lol my friend said that when I tripped out, I looked like I was being arrested by imaginary cops. wierd huh?

Ahh makes sense.
Prehaps Salvia splendens. It is of the same genus.
I've heard from a lot of people who got not thing from Salvia the first few uses and after getting a tourch lighter and heating it more (since it lights harder then marijuana) and held their hits actually had some major effects. Extracts at 10x, 20x, can be chewed or smoked for effects and tend to produce stronger, though not always better trips.

I use meditation to garner willpower. Willpower I then generally waste forcing myself to do schoolwork. I use the clearing the mind technique because it's how I was taught. I generally have too much going on in my head, so I find it benefitial.
I have heard of Lucid Dreaming, I've done it maybe. I can't exactly control when it happens because I rarely remember dreams anyway. I generally dismissed it because of the other BS lore that tends to follow the people who use it (ie drugs, silly religions, depression). But thinking about it right now, it seems like it might be a good relaxer.

never thought of it as a drug thing, though I guess I do know a lot of drug users who do it
I know several though who are in their 30's and have been doing it for years with and don't do drugs and aren't really faith driven, it's just a cool thing the brain can do with practice.

This is a very interesting topic. Good work Tim.![]()
Have you heard about the many studies that were done on Buddhist Monks while they were in meditation? Or the studies that were done on nuns while they were praying? The areas of the brain that were activated were the same in both.
I'm willing to bet that this is very similar for REM sleep and Lucid Dreams.
I'm not sure if this helps anything, just thought it could be realated.

if i could have a lucid dream everynight.
they're awesome. its like you are in control of everything.
Where I live, here in the States, I've noticed that one's perception of the world is intentionally narrowed very much so by others and by the lessons we are taught at birth. It's a very practical society, or, not so much practical, as it's loftiest perceived goals are happiness and benevolence and I don't think it's structure helps this process very much, but it is a society adhering very much to the scientific method. Everything must be named, expressed in language. Things are more important then other things, facts are facts. Truth is in data, not in perception or feelings. Indeed, I've noticed that most of my fellow citizens here in the States have almost no spiritual side to their lives. Most I know are Christians or atheists. Atheists in a sense that no god, nor nothing outside their narrow perception is real. Christians in a sense that they go to church and worship and love a god. In what I've seen of Christianity no attempts to contact god, or to seek a nearness to him are made. No lessons in how to die and greet him either, no thoughts on how to experience god for oneself, only a guide on what he wants. Even the Christian philosophers base their arguments around proving his existence, never in their works do I see them deal with how one might contact god, ways he might effect one’s life except in the vaguest of ways. Anything that does not fit into the narrow scope one is taught to deal with is rejected.
I was reading Aldus Huxley’s the doors of perception a few days ago, and recently finished reading Carlos Castaneda’s Journey to Ixtlan. In both the subject of human perception is dealt with in depth. All cultures teach us to tone out certain things, instinct tunes out other things. Why does the human brain only think one way when it is clear it can safely think others? Clearly much of what we see must be toned out, ignored, or utterly repressed. Our sight, for one, deals mostly with colors, objects, andspatial differences. Recognizing things and judging how to move through them is our foremost concern. Over time or societies have evolved but we still look at things in many ways the way the ancient hunters did. Staring around this room though, focusing on the shadows instead of the objects, and putting immense concentration on purposely tuning out spatial differences I am, with a lot of effort, able to create a much different world where new details become apparent. Much like while under the effects of drugs I can see things in new ways, ripples in walls, start colors and odd glows and tones. It’s taken me some practice but I’ve been able to make a good deal of progress. With some time and effort I’ve found it easy to look at things other ways, but thinking about things in a whole new light is proving much more difficult. I find it impossible toentertain the thought that what I see can be “real” or useful and often when doubt comes I lose focus and can no longer see things the way I am seeing them. My memory of these odd views is always unusually hazy, like the memory of dreams. It’s as if my mind wants to focus out ideas and senses outside the narrow focus it has always held.
The purpose of this post is to ask if anyone else has similar thoughts to mine, and has had progress in contacting anything on a spiritual level without the use of psychoactive drugs. I have a hard time excepting my drug experiences as real or thinking of things in new ways despite my drug experiences and the new methods of thought they show me because I can’t accept them. I’m wondering if anyone has had way of deviating from normal perception so totally that you can be sure what you are seeing is real, and perhaps contact with or travel through other realities, without the use of drugs.
Anyone know any works like the aformentioned or have any thoughts on Dr. C. D. Broad's theory that "the purpose of the brain and nervous system and sensory organs is in the main elminative and not productive. Each person is at each moment capable of remembering all that has ever happened to him and of preciving everyhting that is happening in the universe. The function of the brain and nervous system is to protect us from being overwhelmed and confused by the mass of largly useless and irrelevant knowledge-"?
