Ok so last night me and my friends were smokein and watched "The Amazing Race" on tv just because it was on. so, there were these two jewish guys on the show... followin? ok.
heres the thing, when you look at alot of jewish people you can tell just by looking at them they are jewish. you can just tell by the way they look. by this you would have to say its a race just because you cant be like "oh look at that guys phisical apperance, he looks like a catholic." or "he looks like a rasta."
the problem is this... people convert to judism... its rare but it happens. you cant convert to a race. it would be like me sayin "ight, im gona be black now" or "im gona be muslim now."
so which is it? is it race or religion? to me this seems like a good question but it probly isnt.

I know a guy who's Jewish, and he was telling me once that Judaism (sp?) is like a race, because you can't just "become" a Jew. Apparently it takes like, at least 3 years to convert. I can't quite remember the other stuff he told me. Something like how the religion continues through generations etc etc.

but i can convert to judism and im not of jewish decent... if its a race then conversion is a impossiblility. i get where your tryin to go with it though.

just a quick note.
a Muslim is a follower of Islam. Islam is a religion and not a race....so you can convert to Islam.

It is hard to convert to judaism, but that doens't make it a race. It is a religion and while there is a "jewish look," there are tons of jewish people out there who don't look jewish and tons of christians that could pass for jewish. just like there are arabs who are christian.
of course you can't say "I'm going to become black." because black isn't a religion. there is no comparison.
Judaism is a religion. It happens that there is a "look" that evolved from it, but it doesn't mean it is a race. it is certainly an enthnicity and a culture, but jews are caucasians.

It's like saying I'm a white guy but I want to be a rapper. Do I have to be black as 99% of all rappers are? I don't think so.
Judaism is full of Jewish people, but that shouldn't mean people can't convert and become Jewish. I am sure there are generations of people who weren't Jewish but converted to Judaism so long ago that no one knows otherwise now.
Yeah, the physical appearance can be a clue, but you start to border on stereotyping by saying, "Oh yeah, that guys a Jew", just because of the way he looks.
Judaism is both a race and a religion. The two are not mutually exclusive however.
The techincal ethnic associations related to the "Jewish" people are the Ashkenazim, Sephards, and Israelites, collectively they are often referred to as the Hebrews, the Jewish Peoples, or Jews. They were seperated in the diaspora into those significant racial groupings. The vast majority of Ashkenazim, Sephards and Israelites practice the religion of Judaism.
However, converts to Judaism are just that, converts...they are not ethnically members of the tradtional ethnic groups that practiced the monotheistic tradition of Judaism. They merely follow the dictates of the religion.
Likewise there are ethnic "Jews" who do not follow the religion. There are Christianized Ashkenazim, and there are Muslim Sephards. They are rare however.
In conclusion, Carolyn was correct.
