I don't see what's so different about scientology that makes it such a spectacle as of late, aside from maybe their courting of celebrities.

As far as religions that deviate from the cultural norm, hasidic Jews, the Amish, Christian Scientists, are far more radical.
Inspirational quote on individuality #223: "Lately everyone I know/ has been shittin' all over me/ Hey you, and all of my good friends/ They disowned my fucking friends and me/ I guess it's because/ I gotta go off in my little own direction/ But fuck 'em all. I'll never follow./ They can suck on my erection." - Mr. GG Allin

Scientology was founded by a single person. That screams cult to me. Also they are fucking whack jobs that focus their energy on protecting the name of scientology like they have something to hide. Perhaps on that fact alone....it seems they have a lot to hide.

Ruby, most of those are pretty cultish, or were just someone's take on an existing religion that others adopted (Luther, Clavin, etc). LRH invented Scientology out of thin air.

As opposed to all the religons founded on facts and research Gosu?

I'll agree that Scientology is complete BS, but the only difference between Scientology and any other religion is that Scientology is new. Take a look at Mormonism. Based off an existing religion, and yet new enough that most people are skeptical and think of it as more of a cult than a religion. In two thousand years, who knows, Scientology might be the new Christianity, and there will be reports of the miracles L.R.H. performed before his death and ascension to wherever it is dead Scientologists go. Thin air is where all religions come from, and return to when they die.

It's like two people debating what colour Santa's coat is. One says it's Green, the other says it's Blue. You're sure it's Red, but it doesn't matter anyway because he doesn't exist.

No, look, there seems to be a great void of knowledge concerning the terrible things that Scientology is up to and regularly does. It's not just regular bullshit like 'other religions', it's criminal and can be assigned responsibility for several deaths, kidnappings, multiple instances of intense harrassment, barratry, torture, government infiltration, extortion...

I 100% agree with saint. Scientology is a cult. It's not a religion, and they operate more like a business.

If you want to learn about Christianity, you can read the bible for free. Same with a Qur'an etc.

But if you want to join and learn scientology, you'll have to pay thousands of dollars. And once you're in, it's really hard to get out. They make you cut off contact with non scientologists, and pretty much brainwash you.

Re: several deaths, other religions have also been responsible for the odd death here and there.

Re: kidnappings, one look at Iraq or the Gaza Strip shows you that religious fundamentalists are responsible for kidnappings.

Re: multiple instances of intense harassment, I think the response to the Mohammed cartoons speaks for itself.

Re: battery and torture, the crusades didn't exactly just consist of people knocking on doors and handing out free bibles.

Re: government infiltration, look at the present world leaders. The vast majority are religious.

Sorry, I'm not seeing the difference here.

I know what you mean Tri. I had similar thoughts. As much as I think scientology is a bit of tripe... well, their practices aren't so far away from other religions over time. And to be fair, I think most religions are a bit of tripe.

I'm in the odd position of agreeing with SpikeyMikey about religions being a negative thing. Even if I'm not as militant.

I don't mean to compare Scientology to the vast history of religion, everywhere and for all time. I mean to compare current religions operating within the borders of countries like the U.K., Canada, U.S., etc... In which case there is a clear difference between the Anglicans down the street and the routinely criminal actions of Scientology.

But surely you're not grouping all scientologists under one umbrella? By the same logic, we could say that Catholicism is responsible for sexual abuse, rape, murder, bestiality, and any other crime that anyone who calls themselves Catholic cares to commit. I'm sure all of these things have been carried out, probably even this year, by Catholics, but we don't refer to these things as 'the criminal actions of Catholicism' for a good reason.
