For all of you who would never have an abortion, are you opposed to other forms of birth control? What exactly is it about a zygote pre-gestation that makes it seem more important a type of potential human life then egg/sperm cells?[/b]
I'm not opposed to other forms of contraception, even though my faith teaches otherwise. It's a personal preference that I have choosen for me.

It's an emotional choice for me. That's my answer.

Why is it different? I don't know. It just is. I guess it's just what I could live with... you know.

I'm 100% pro-choice. Personally, I don't even believe that your last option up there should be an option. Either it's okay or it's not. Most of the argument for pro-life is that it's immoral and I've even heard the term "murder" in many instances. If it's immoral or even murder, how could it be okay in ANY circumstance??

I hate it when people say that. I also don't like it when people say, "not as a means of birth control..." (Sorry, potterface. ) It seems like a very black and white issue to me. If abortion is legal, no one can tell a woman how it can or can not be used. Quite frankly, it's no one's damn business.

Abortion is an easy question, policy wise. The reasoning goes something like this...

Either a) abortion is legal and the 'rights' of the fetus are violated b) abortion is illegal and the 'rights' of the mother are violated

There is complete agreement that the mother is a person, with all the rights that come from that.
There is debate as to whether a fetus constitutes a person, with all the rights that come from that.

Therefore, the laws reflect protecting the 'rights' of the mother, and abortion is legal.

Even if a zygote/fetus is considered a human life, a ban on abortion is saying a woman has no say over her body when it comes to preserving another human life. By the same token, a woman can live with only one kidney, and hey, people need kidney transplants, lets slice and dice. After all she has no say over how her body is used when it comes to matters of "life or death."

exactly. a woman is the only person who truly knows if she can and should bring a life into this world.
the only time I strongly disagree is when a girl just keeps going in to the clinics. and that's partly because it is so unbelievably unhealthy to start the hormones and get the baby thing running, only to stop it in it's tracks. and partly because a condom is a much better way to stop from having a child.

I wholeheatedly believe an abortion should be legal.

There are enough kids in this world without families. The population is already growing at a rapidly climbing pace. Why force someone to bring a child into the world when they cant take care of it? Cant afford food/diapers/bills. What then? Social workers come in, take the child away, stick it in an over crowded orphange, where its life isnt much better than it was beforehand. Wheres the good in that?

The whole thought that abortion should be against the law is ludacris.

Abortion is actually a way of preserving the human race, in my opinion. I mean, those girls out there who are young and aren't ready to have a baby because they are partying, or drinking, or smoking, or drugging or all of the above....

If they wanted an abortion and they weren't allowed one then nothing would stop them to continue their drug and alcohol ways, because they don't care about that kid anyways and they are addicts. So the baby comes out with FAS and down syndrome and a number of other horrible birth defects a child can get when it's mother drinks, smokes, does drugs, doesn't get proper nutrition, etc.

Those 9 months that kid is in there are important, because even if you're a shitty mother after the fact at least you could take care of it while it's in the womb and give it a fighting chance to be normal. Sometimes babies come out so messed up they don't have a chance in life. They have brain damage to the point where they have to be taken care of like babies for the rest of their lives. Like a 25 year old getting spoon fed oatmeal. It's really sad.

Oookaaaaaaay...... a bit of a random thought that but y'know......

To potterface who said abortion shouldn't be used as birth control - Abortion IS birth control. It's the ultimate form of birth control. It's like saying 'I love soccer as long as there's no guys on a pitch kicking a ball around'. I'm not taking the piss or anything .

I've yet to hear a good argument against abortion. Religious arguments don't count because I don't believe that I'm going to go to hell for supporting abortion.

Also, what the fuck is with the terms 'Pro-Life' and Pro-Choice'??? Such bullshit. I support both life and choice! How about just Pro and Anti-Abortion?????
The broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying. The point of BC is to PREVENT pregnancy from happening.

If you are already pregnant, then there are no more preventive measures you can take. I mean, I suppose you could prevent that baby from being born... but that's another thing completley. Abortion shouldn't be used as birth control, it should be used because there is nothing else you can do. Like you don't have enough money to raise a child so why bring one into the world? That is very responsible. It would have been more responsible to not get knocked up in the first place, but whatever.

What on Earth??? You just said the point of BC is to prevent pregnancy and then that abortion shouldn't be used as birth control. Well, make your mind up love!

The point I was making was a simple one which i didn't think needed explaining. That is that abortion prevents the birth of a child. That's 'birth control' right there. It's not 'pregnancy control' but come on, don't be so pernickety! Also, abortion isn't just something that poor people or drugged up teenagers get. There are plenty of women to whom having a child would be a great hindrance to their career or life plans.

Yeah, it's not insemination or gestation control. The end is the same, not allowing a potential human life go on developing.

The point of a birth control PILL or a birth control SHOT or a birth control PATCH or a fucking Nuva ring or whatever they have out now; these are to prevent a woman from ever becoming pregnant. So the little sperm cannot inseminate the little egg. Just because it's called BIRTH control, doesn't mean that because abortions prevent birth from happening, it's a form of birth control.

Since a woman has to already be pregnant to have an abortion, you are no longer preventing pregnancy.

What is there to make up my mind about? I think that's very cut and dry. People in Boston call driveways "door yards" but that doesn't mean that they are yards that hold doors. You say because it's called birth control that since abortions stop the birth from happening it counts as birth control.

Sounds like you're the one being a little too literal.
