    So if Catholics aren't paedophiles...

    ...why is the age of consent in Vatican City 12 years old?!

    Lower than ANY OTHER COUNTRY IN THE WORLD?!

    By any other country, I mean any other country that actually bothers to set an age limit. Some countries (or American states) you're allowed to get away with it if there's a maximum of a 4 year age gap. Not so in Vatican City.

    So what's the craic here?

    It's holdover from where it was normal (everywhere) to get married at 12. Vatican City is tiny and populated almost entirely by old men who have better things to do so I guess they never got around to changing it - or there's a law that superseds it somewhere.

    Just because the age of consent is 12, doesn't make it compulsory

    A few years ago (maybe 10) there was a push to lower the age of consent in Australia to 12.
