just as i was dozing off to sleep last night, i had a thought about why meditation is usefull for personal development

when we meditate, we have our eyes shut and we block out the rest of the world, and my point is... we as people consist of 2 parts, the inner and the outer.

the outer is the the part of us that is mearly a reaction to the world around us, and the inner is what we are with out the influences of the outside world.

when we meditate, we shut out the "outer" and listen to the "inner" listening to the inner self is the only way to truly explore who we are and what we want.

Personally, I could never meditate. It requires being very relaxed and having nothing on your mind. That's impossbile for me. I'm always worrying about something or another and can't concentrate on one single thing. I fail when it comes to meditation.

I totally disagree. Your inner is a total reflection of what's going on outside of you. The inner dialogue of an Eskimo is probably different then the inner dialogue of an African. Why? Because that inner dialogue is totally influenced by what's going on around them. Everything about you is influenced by the things around you. You have no friggin' way of separating yourself from the shit that goes on. It's impossible not to be influenced by it. End of story. No part of you exists that has not been influenced in some way or another by society or the environment you live in.

If all you're doing with meditation is trying to block something out then it's useless, because as soon as you stop meditating the flood gates open. Meditation will tell you what your inner self wants? Everything you want is totally reflected by society. Society tells you what you want. Nice car, family, the rest. All your desires are a reflection of the society you live in. I'm positive that any inner dialogue you have discussing "what you want" has been heavely influenced by what society tells you.

While I agree with Digity (wow, that actually happened?) that your inner and outer can't be separated, I don't conclude that it is all based on society's views. As a Christian, what you would call my "inner" beliefs are based on doctrine, rather than society. I'm sure the same thing goes for other religions. Then there are people who just don't agree with society without having any religious convictions.

I'd was going to create a very strongly constructed argument against your position; but then I got high.

Okay, I over used "society" as an example, but I meant other things like doctrine...heck, everything for that matter. Even disagreeing with society is still an influence. It's just the flip side of a certain influence...but it's still an influence.

What you just described is 100% outer, you are mislabelling it as inner. Get to know yourself better and you might understand what epoch and oklahoma are talking about.

All I'm saying is that there's no part of you untouched by influence. It seems like we all agree on what we are talking about when we mention this supposed "outer" self. However, I'm saying that I totally disagree that there's this inner part, which is totally untouched. Humans are constantly reacting to the things that happen around them. Our senses, nervous system, thoughts...all this is conditioned by what's going on around us. It's impossible to escape that, because you can't remove yourself from this world. You and the world are basically one in the same. When you look at a flower you might think it's pretty or whatever, but you're merely projecting something which you call "beauty" out into the world. Inevitably, everything you do is subjective and under the influence of how you perceive the world. That's inescapable, but you're telling me that there is this inner part, which is totally free of outside influences. I don't see it...and that's after a lot of self-examination.

What does that even mean? Isn't everything you do a reaction? Even sitting down to meditate is a reaction.

Creation? What are you talking about here?

The way i see it is,

Does the inner self develop from birth, or the time from which the brain is active in the womb? OR are we all born with unique 'inner' parts?

I would have to say it develops, it develops from inputs from the outside, the outter self maybe. but inputs never the less. Now, it's ability to 'create' ideas, the ideas heard during meditation, is directly proportional to development, exponential maybe.

So, in summary, as one develops, the ability to manifest ideas grows, thus enhancing the meditation.

here is an illustration that I drew to help explain, at least it helped me.
