ok, this argument has been made before...... but i have a question.

(the following example can be anybody, i just chose a saint because i felt like it)

there is a saint who stands on a bridge overlooking a train (with one person in it) rushing at a man standing in front of a pile of razor sharp rocks, the saint can save one man.

now pretend that a saint cannot make evil descions, and pretend the saint knows all of the givens stated above.

does the saint save the person on the tracks? the person in the train? or neither?

if the train engineer is saved, the man on the tracks will think the saint is evil for not saving his life, if the man on the tracks is saved, the engineer will think the saint is evil.* and if neither is saved, both will think him evil.

i propose that goodness and evilness is a subjective state and therefore is different for each person who experiences it.
well said...

hmmm I don't actually believe in good/evil.

If there is a Satan, he must be God's other half, or at least, working for God to keep the balance.

i.e. Say there's a butcher, who kills thousands of animals, then goes home to be a good parent... are they evil? Where does the line go?

dragon knight was explaining the yin and the yang.. with out evil good does not exist with out good evil does not exist. its the nature of balance in every good there is evil and in every evil there is good. then karma comes into play do good things good things will happen and vice versa. then some people also believe in order to achieve goodness to to suffer evilness so this subject goes deeper beyond anything imagined so for most people its to find inner balance of the two

n my World History class 20 minutes ago, the teacher was talking about Lock and Hobbs.

Hobbs believed that People were bad, that they could not be trusted. Hobbs wanted a strict and "No holds Barred" governmet

Lock thought they could be trusted and wanted a small "soft" goverment.
That, in my eyes is somewhat "good" and "evil"

i dont beleive in good or evil becoz we are all evil but we are all good aswell. you might think im a dumbass about it but really we all do ''evil''stuff nd we all do ''good'' stuff. i dont suppose any of us are truely evil becoz that is immpossible but no-one is truely good. how many of us use the name of god in vain. i know i do. im not a christian in fact im not religious but i can accept people sayin that god can do no wrong make no mistakes but if there is a god then why is there so much badness in the world. no-body human or not can be perfect or completly infalable. i think that some people are maybe more good than others but no-one is evil or good.

wow that's so weird.. i've been thinkin of this very topic for a long while..

good.. evil..i don't think so.. we'd probably have people running around in capes and stuff.. i really don't even beleive in 'right and wrong', it's sorta all "relative" the way a person weighs disadvantages - advantages

Evil is the opposite of what you happen to believe is good.
Good is the opposite of what you happen to believe is evil.

I do not believe in good and evil, but I still do propose a flaw in that thinking:
What about universal goods or evils? Couldn't spite be considered evil? No one benefits from it, and in retrospect everyone believes it is an incorrect choice.

I believe that there is no goal to life or existance - once you're dead, you're gone. It just is. I also believe without a goal we cannot make a wrong choice - all paths we take lead to the same pointless ending. I would also define evil as a bad choice. Evil is, in essence, wrongness; and without a goal you can do no wrong.

It's not the most solid arguement against good and evil because it uses the premise that there is no purpose in life. I, however, am of that belief, and always feel that someone who believes in purposelessness and believes in good and evil are being strongly hypocritical.

Good and bad happen simultaneously. The universe is in constant equilibrium. And whose to say what determines what is good or evil? And how does the universe know what is good and bad? It doesn't. It simply responds to what you are vibrating so to speak, it responds to your energy, whatever is the focus of your energy. From there it is perspective.

They must coexist. Lets say you had a coin... oneside was evil the other was good.... you did everything you possibly could to avoid the one side (evil).... what would happen? obviously you would lose both.

Good and evil is within' you. Not what you read as lies on whatever medium. If you fell you can do good, do it.. if you can't and are destructive, try to mess up as much as you can coz eventually you will vanish without a trace.

Be good. I was once bad. Now I feel guilty for the smallest thinngs. We are here to care not to kill. WHat is important in life is to experience as much as you can before you go. Life is short, make a difference.

tell me is this a better ending

I do believe there is such a thing as good and evil. In light of killing a baby and holy wars, the reason I think these are evil is because if you take a human life then you are one of the evil ones. But for good we have to look at Mr. Snyder saying "good is different, more like community". To me, this means goodness is everywhere around us, as in loving your fellow man. Whether you think I am right or wrong that is for you to decide. But one cannot exist without the other. So from my point of view there is both good and evil.. The people that started the war might have thought it was a good thing. Other people might have thought it was bad. The person who killed the baby might have thought he was doing something good, others thought it was bad. So I won’t take sides. Maybe you will but I won’t.[/b]
