Information Security Terms GlossaryIn a phishing attack, a fraudster spams the Internet with email claiming to be from a reputable financial institution or e-commerce site. The email message urges the recipient to click on a link to update their personal profile or carry out some transaction. The link takes the victim to a fake website designed to look like the real thing. However, any personal or financial information entered is routed directly to the scammer.
I am quite fortunate to have an e-mail address that is almost spam free. But for the past week or so, every day, I've gotten at least one phishing e-mail.
Paypal. Some other random company. And Bank of America! I've never even heard of them.
I fell for the first one, pretending to be Paypal. Fortunately, I typed my password in wrong by accident, then realised. And I've since changed it anyway. And it's made me more security conscious, which is a good thing.
As horrible as they are in themselves, it's the frequency I've been getting them that's really pissing me off. Grrr.
