    People That Steal

I'm so pissed off. I can't believe this. My ourse got stolen yesterday. I went on a hike with my family, and left my purse in the car, barely in visible sight, came back, and my sister's window had been busted, the purse was gone, and my aunt's car had been broken into, two digital cameras, a video camera, and two purses were stolen from that car. I went home to check the transactions from my debit card online, and $30 had been spent at Go Chicken Go, and they tried to access my account though three different ATM's six different times. My glasses, all my IDs, my keys, everything...gone. I luckily grabbed my camera and cell phone before the hike. I'm just so pissed off at the AUDACITY of people, and how they could resort to such desperate measures. I had pictures in there of my family, little notes from my nieces and my nephews...and it was a super cute purse, that's probably been thrown into the trash can. I just realized that my Social Security Card and my check book were in there. They could totally oull identity thefy if they wanted to....GREAT. I feel like I'm naked with no debit card and no ID. I'm home because of Thanksgiving and have to go back up to where I go to school tomorrow, so I will have no money or ID. I just can't believe people! I could never break into someone's car. My sister had just gotten the car a month ago, and now she has to pay $200-500 to get the window replaced. I feel terrible....and really really angry. On top of that I got food poisioning. And it was horrible. I threw up all night. Someone cheer me up...please.

Sorry that happened. It sucks when something like that happens. I tend to feel violated...

If it makes you feel better, I'm fairly certain I helped fund some sort of terrorist plot. My credit card number was stolen somehow (I didn't lose my card and I never used it to make online purchases) and was used to purchase "voice changing software" and video surveillance equipment. Oh, and let's not forget the tickets to Chile and some other South American country. I'm still fighting the charges. And my Discover was used for a purchase at Circuit City in Florida a few years ago for $2500. They took it right off, though. Discover was a MILLION times easier to deal with than Citibank for unauthorized charges. FYI.

Anyway, I would recommend getting a fraud alert set up on the credit bureaus. I'm pretty sure it's free since you had your property and information stolen.

    Go Chicken Go? Lol

Sorry for finding that funny but was it the one on Troost Avenue? I find it stereotypically awful that the one most dangerous parts of the city has all of the fried chicken places...there's even like a nice KFC on Troost.

Anyway Bebe that super sucks, make sure you take all the appropriate measures to get your stuff closed and banks notified. You can probably notify the social security agency or whatever and see about getting a new one or if there's been any recent activity regarding it.

Also- where were you hiking that it happened? I'll make sure not to hike there.

I hate that. Criminals are so fucking desperate that they don't care what they steal. They basically made out with some cash and a free chicken sandwich and cost you no end of headaches. It doesn't bother them to cause hundreds of dollars worth of damage to get away with $20. I fucking hate that.

Yeeep, the one on Troost. I checked my transactions, and it showed the exact address. I was so pissed. And then I laughed. Because, like you said, it was so stereotypical. We were hiking on Little Blue, near the firefighter memorial (If you know where that is) and had parked our cars in a very public golf course parking lot. And it was daytime and yet NOBODY saw them. And Cerel, you took the words right out of my mouth. I've been so upset all weekend. All I had in the account was $260-money that my grandparents had given to me for school. Luckily I closed the debit card, and got reinbursed, but I'm still worried about my checks/SSN/IDs.

@ Aimee...oh my god. I was bitching because my debit card got stolen. I can't IMAGINE the hell you went through. God, people just infuriate me, taking what doesn't belong to them, and causing you all that grief. I took your advice and set up fraud alert. I feel a LOT better. Thank you for your great advice. Much appreciated.

Actually, I think your situation is more difficult to deal with than mine. I just had one credit card used and it's generally pretty easy to get resolved. Having your ID and personal information stolen is tougher to deal with. Also, I'd prefer to have my credit card stolen than my debit card. Most credit cards offer fraud protection (for free) and they haven't been paid for the charges, yet. When it's a debit card that's stolen, they've already received the money so there's less incentive for them to fight the charges for you.

Anyway, good thing you added the fraud alert. Another thing I'd recommend is that you have it removed after a few years. When it's no longer necessary to have the fraud alert, it's kind of a pain in the ass to deal with. I'm an underwriter for personal loans right now and we have to talk to people that have fraud alerts at a verified number (no cell phones) and verify specific information before we can proceed with the loan.

Do you think that since they have my Social Security number and IDs, they will try to pull something? I'm really scared about this. The police said they more than likely won't, but it terrifies me. Is there any way you can get a new Social Security number?

The fraud alert prevents them from opening something in your name. The police are probably accurate as far as it's unlikely they'll use your SSN. Someone that breaks into your car probably doesn't even know how to use that information. But it's smart to have the fraud alert, just in case.
