ME1, pretty excellent
I bought and still put up with my xbox just for Mass Effect.
My cousin got it for Christmas in 07 and I got so engrossed in the story I bought my 360 and just that game 3 weeks later in '08.
A sci-fi story like Halo but technically an RPG with a more personal aspect thanks to trends of its developer, Bioware.
The stats and origins you choose in the beginning as well as the many difficult and personal choices you make thoughout the storyline dictate your entire playthough, and the experience can be compeletely different depending on MANY different factors.
Also has amazing dialoge and rare romance side plots that, as far as I can tell, are unique to Bioware games.
The most impressive thing about this series is the fact that all the choices, romances and consequences from the first game carry over into the sequel that came out just recently:

Has anyone seen or played Mass Effect 1?

ME1, pretty excellent

i'm playing Dragon Age, but my husband says he's going to introduce me to Mass Effect, because its similar, but in a different setting, and you can have lesbian alien sex

Yea I just purchased it from games on demand but my xbox doesn't have enough HD space so I now have to either buy it again or flash a bigger hard drive for my xbox

Yeah, Dragon Age and Knights of the Old Republic are both Bioware games also.
Lesbian sex is something I heard of but didnt actually do.
The alien you get with is from an all female race, so they have no issues sleeping with women or other races. I think that scene was the only reason it was rated 'M' and not 'T'.
I played Dragon Age just up until ME2 came out and it's basically the medieval counterpart to Mass Effect. The problem is that there is no voice over for your character like there is in ME and that makes a world of difference in the conversations; gives your character a defined personality.
You also have the choice to be 'good' or 'evil'.
My guy was an ass.
You have a choice between the human chick and the alien chick to romance.
I led them both on and then they confronted me and made me choose.
I chose the human and the alien, who's all senstive, went and cried.
Then I killed my human girlfriend in the next mission.

WHAT A GAME!
I got it on the back of your review Ester and I certainly don't regret it.
It's more like a film than a game but has more than enogh action to stop it from entering 'boring walk around talking to people all day' RPG territory. Like Payaso said, it's similar to the KOTOR games but it definitely improves on them. The universe they created is spectacular and very nuanced. In fact, nuanced is probably the best way to describe the entire game. The way your own choices affect the various plots and subplots makes Mass Effect so, soooo satisfying. I love the way you can gain or lose party members depending on decisions you make and when there are particularly important and dare-I-say heart-wrenching decisions to be made, they're not easy ones and they change the way the rest of the game plays out. Very, very well done!
The voice acting is top-notch. In fact, I can quite confidently say that Mass Effect has the best voice acting of any game I've ever played. Seth Green's Joker is a highlight as is Kaiden Alenko (same dude who does Carth in KOTOR surely). It's just so well acted and the character animations and graphics are superb and everything comes together to make an extremely engrossing, satisfying game. Levelling up is handled very well as are weapons. The inventory needed a bit more streamlining but that's the most minor of criticisms and does nothing to take away from such a spectacular game.
I'd give it 10/10
I'm going to install Mass Effect 2 very soon (I'm playing on PC obviously) and am looking forward to continuing the story (or starting a new one, not sure which one yet). Hopefully I'll get to keep my badass armour.
The broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying. These people know only too well how to use falsehood for the basest purposes... Adolf Hitler
Well, I lurked on the thread and bought the game. Fuckin A! It's been a while since I've been so jazzed about a game! Sadly, I think I'm nearing the end of it but awesome game!!!

Theres an officially released expansion pack. As in a major expansion pack, not downloadable content. Dragon Age: Awakening.

I guess it might actually be considered a sequel.

Mass Effect 2 has a huge plot twist that frankly pissed me off.
But it's every bit as good as ME1 while enhancing the strenghts and lightening on the weaknesses of the first.
My dad and I popped it in the midnight of its release (my birthday present), and we both instantly did not like that you now have "heat clips", essentially forcing you to "reload" your weapons.
But yes, the story you start in ME1 does carry over as do all your choices, no matter how minor or significant, including deaths and romances.
The best thing about this game is that you can replay it.
Start all over with a new character in ME1, make all the choices you didnt make in your previous game and carry them over to ME2 and make all new choices there again.
Your two storylines for Shepard will be VASTLY different from each other and that in itself will make the game even that more satisfying.
If you get into it enough, you find yourself wanting to live out every possible outcome of every single choice, and because so many compound on each other, it makes this task almost endless.
I got distracted for a month or two playing Fallout 3 (also epic but very dark), and am getting back into ME2 now that they've released tons of new content via downloads.
And yes, Dragon Age: Awakening is a sequel.
The trick is that this game was in development for 5 years, started before Mass Effect actually.
This is also why the voice acting doesnt include your own character's voice.
So essentially both games were developed back to back allowing 6 months between releases.
