    Alt. Music

Excuse the lame-o title for the thread. Is anyone else disillusioned with the alt. music scene?.
Im fully aware that it was hijacked some time ago..
but that aside, i really feel like im completely disillusioned with it.

I went to see the band Mastodon a few nights back...
ive seen them a couple of times before.
To be completely frank, it was a fucking let down.
I waited the entire gig to hear at least one song not off the new album.
(i think the new album sucks btw).
It was plain to see they had no passion for the gig that night.

    Even bands like Down...
i know its a matter of taste, but to me the latest album was a let down.
To me thats not what Down is. Down will always be 'nola' to me.
A bunch of guys just fucking jamming out. Destroying and tearing metal a new A-hole.
You have Kirk syaing, '..were getting older, we cant be roaring for ever..'
or w.e the fuck it is he said. Next thing you know, hes working on a bunch of crowbar shit.
Just admitt it, you released an album which was good for what it was. But thats not what you are.

I quit buying Alt. music mags when i was about 15. Just cause the bands they were featuring were utter shite.

I remember the day's when Kerrang! used to feature eyehategod, satyricon, amen, the haunted, shit like that....
I dont even give it a second look now.

Ultimately i just dont want to conclude that im a music snob. Becuase im not. i have a broad taste in music. Maybe im just not aware of any decent Alt. bands since ive become so disheartened and out of touch with the scene. But seems to me as far as Alt. music goes the breadth of the underground is shrinking like fuck.
Even Darkthrone have started releasing crappy albums.
As much as it pains me to say it, its true.

Recently ive been listening to Dubstep. Which to me is darker than most of the Alt. shit out there atm.

Anyway, this isnt so much of a solid topic thread, more of a rant. But im interested to hear what other people think.

Brew, Tri, Atom i know you guys have gd taste. Id like to hear your opinions.

Absolutely yeah. There reeeally aren't many decent new bands coming out that you get to hear about. However, if you delve deeper there's always great shit to be found. Check out websites like StonerRock.com who always have new bands showcasing their stuff. Ninehertz.co.uk is another really good one. Ever since the heavier stuff became more mainstream (bands like Enter Shikari would've been on CD:UK if were still around) the whole thing just seems to have gone severely downhill.

Well 1) you're a lucky bastard for getting to see them. They're not playing in Spain atm. and 2) I personally believe Crack The Skye is absolutely their best album to date! And this is from someone who bought their first album when it came out like 8 years ago! I think it's a great leap forward from Leviathan and helps to put Blood Mountain (my least-fave by a mile) into perspective. As for the shows, well, they spent 2 years making a concept album and wanted to take it to audiences around the world. I guess it might be a bummer for some not getting to hear some of the old favourites but I guess that's just how it is. Last few times I went to see Tool, I'd have loved to hear stuff like The Grudge, Third Eye, Pushit, Jimmy, Parabol/a but it just ain't like that sadly. BOO!!!

I've only listened to that last Down album a couple of times. I don't like it. It's like 'Down-by-Numbers'. Very lame. Glad I got to see them before they wrote that turd of a CD. But like you say - new Crowbar shit coming which is only a good thing. Reminds me...

Not even for the life-size-double-sided poster featuring Avenged Sevenfold on one side and 30 Seconds to Mars on the other???? I wonder whyever not!?!?!

Night in with some ketamine is it?

I feel you man, I really do. A lot of my friends who were into metal and hard rock and stuff are listening to a lot of folk these days. Now I'm not a folk kinda guy so that's not hapenning to me but it is a sad state of affairs. Going to metal gigs, there were always plenty of older people there who'd listened to Metallica as teenagers then got into stuff like Pantera and then Machine Head, Mastodon etc... but it seems that the bloodline is going to stop there unless we get decent new bands. I hadn't listened to a new metal album I thought was any good until I got the new Mastodon effort. Absolutely sucks. Just look at the lineup for Download Festival where you've got AC/DC, RATM and Aerosmith. Hardly good is it when two of the bands you need to headline a rock festival are in their 50s and the rest of the lineup is filled with the same familiar faces (Stone Sour! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?).

Something does need to be done. And soon.
The broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying. These people know only too well how to use falsehood for the basest purposes... Adolf Hitler

Honestly, ive just never really been a huge fan. dont get me wrong i apreciate them and i enjoy alot of their stuff. I guess its just a matter of taste.

Hell yeh, same here. One of the best gigs i ever went to. Fuckin 'Jail' live.
epic. and im glad u agree about the lastet album, im sick and tierd of people who are going to buy into any old shit just because it has a certain band name on the cover or its Kerrang!'s main feature this week. wtf is alternative about that. fuckin trend hoppers.

i agree man, i wouldnt consider paying for donnington unless there was a band i REALLY felt i needed to see. and tbh, even then. i dont exaclty feel like paying in the hundreds to see Rage.
its just fucking sad the way that a band like 'tera are probably considered underground or 'too agressive' to alot of the younger fans of 'Alt.' music.
Its kind of that whole cliquey mentality finally getting its filthy fkn hands on the metal scene.
it starts of as some emo trend and then its starts to creep into metal and water down another last hope for anything sincere.

    On a more poistive note...
