I think this goes in SD, but if not feel free to move it to the proper place.

Now that I have graduated from high school, the pressure is building on me to find a job and attend college. The problem is that, I just don't know what I want to do. I don't know if studying Criminal Justice to become a Detective, is what I want and that I would be happy with the career. I would just like to take a break, and go to Hollywood.

My mom is throwing the whole adult thing on me, since I turn 18 this week. Basically saying, I have to have a job and pay rent at the house. Which I understand, it's just adding to the topping of the cake right now.

I just don't think I would be happy going to school right away. I would like to take a year off, but I don't want to become lazy and not willing to go back to school after that year. This scares me, because my studying habits are already horrible enough, however if I am really interested in what I am studying I will do my work, but if I am not, then I won't, so I am wishing I will be interested in my studies in college.

I guess the other thing, is the whole college money part. I don't have any money for it. I could take out a student loan, but my mom rather screwed herself on that and I don't want to do that. My FAFSA also hasn't came back, so that's the other scare.

I also didn't do to well on my SAT scores or overall GPA. I just don't know what I want to do yet, but I want to do something. I do intend to get a job here shortly.

I'm sorry that this is long, but I am just confused right now and scared of what to do in the future. Have any of you felt like this? What did you do about it? How did you know that the career you are pursuing, is what you want? Or did you all not feel like this? Any help or advice will benefit me. Thanks.

i had some major depression in grade 12 from the stress coming at me from every direction. everyone pressuring me to do well on exams and telling me to figure out what i want to do. it fucking sucked. i couldn't even enjoy my own graduation because i was too stressed. i ended up saying fuck that and taking a year off. it was a very enjoyable year, too. take a little time to decide before you waste your time and money. there's a lot of factors to consider when choosing a career.

yeah i kinda know how you feel. i think taking a year off is a really good idea. take a year off, get a job, work ur ass off, get some life experience. you could travel for a bit. if you dont want to do that, you could save your money to help pay for your college fees, if you decide to go to college. you probably aren't thinking straight right now, with all ths pressure and stuff, it'll probably be a lot easier to think when you've sorted yourself out a bit more. goodluck.

My experience has been that when someone takes a year off they pretty much never go back.

It is hard going from high school to college, especially if you have to pay for it yourself. But it builds discipline and I think you are better off getting it out of the way right after high school.

Yeah, that's the thing Speed, I am scared if I were to take a year off I would never want to go back, let alone go back to the school life. And I've seen many people not go back, after a year off.

I could always start in the Winter term, instead of Fall. But still...I just really don't know.

I think a year off could clear my mind and help me figure out what I want to do, but I still don't have any clue what I want to do.

The only way I would take a year off is if I had a job and it took up all of my time.

And if that didn't happen, I could take a student loan out and attend school.

Thanks Genix, Jet, and Speed for your replies. Any other advice?

I am ironically in the same boat as you. I graduated the third. Ive come to a some what solid conclusion that im taking a year off but i kinda wanna take classes during this spring term, ones that i can get out of the way, such as the mathmatics and englishes. I figure that doing it this way gives me for the most part the best of both worlds.

Start part time this fall. There are going to be classes like English, Math, etc. that you'll have to take no matter what major you choose, so at least going for those will keep college fresh in your mind and allow you to ease your way in.

If you have a community college nearby, take advantage of it! It is cheap education and too many people who go, don't take it seriously and end up taking it for granted.

That's what I plan on doing, attending Lane Community College. Cheaper than the UofO, and it won't be so much of a waste of money if I change my major.
