    Back to School...

I'm considering doing some further study. When I say 'further' I mean that I graduated high school and stopped studying after that. This has worked pretty well for me for the 4 years since finishing school - I knuckled down and worked hard, I have a good, challenging job and I bought a house in June last year.

However, I want to study because I am not content. I'm bored with this city (I grew up here), I'm bored with my friends (although they are completely lovely, they are all beginning to settle down which can be...dull...for me), I'm becoming bored of my job...I'm a bit bored of life.

And, they say that only boring people get bored! So I'm trying to do something about that.

Has anybody had experiences with being at Uni (college for you American kiddies) as a 'mature' age student? If I was to being a degree in the second semester of this year, I would be 26 or 27 by the time I've finished. I feel a bit...nervous about that.

I'm also nervous about whether I can actually do it. I hated high school when I was there, but I was in a pretty bad state of mind (as anybody here would know from my early posts...) and didn't apply myself at all. Now I feel like I'm much more mature, I know what I want and I know I have to work hard to get it.

The other thing is what I want to study. Currently I'm working in financial planning, and my boss had a heart-to-heart with me last week, and suggested that I look into a Bachelor of Economics, or Finance. That sounds like it could make me a lot of money in the future, but that doesn't really motivate me. I want to study nutrition, or dietetics, because that is what I'm really interested in. I would also like to study natropathy, or some kind of alternative health subject, but I don't know if I want to get a degree in that.

I also want to move out of my home town. I don't want to go to any of the local universities because I'm just sick of this place. I wonder if it's possible that what I'm looking for is just a change of scenery, rather than embarking on a whole new life direction? I don't want to move to say, Melbourne, for example, and end up working in another office job...with more old people...and make more friends that are beginning to have babies. I need to make more friends my own age, and uni would be a good option for this.

I went straight to college after high school. However when I went to college there were several older people there with me. I'm assuming you are not looking for the sorority experience.

The reality is that I found the older students did far better. They had a taste of the world and took college more seriously. It wasn't just an extension of high school. They had a goal and did the work to make it happen.

Go with what you want to do - not with what someone thinks you should do. If you have the long term goal of working in nutrition then I think you should pursue it. You'll be much happier and fulfilled doing that then being stuck behind a ledger dealing with numbers. Also, while the business world should correct itself during your years of study, the reality is that there is and will be a much greater demand for health professionals. The obesity rate in the western world is astounding and you will be kept busy.

I can completely see you working in some kind of clinic as a nutritionist etc. Look into your options. Talk to the career counselors at your local colleges to get an idea of what you need to do. Do the research. Also check about student loans and try to finance as little as possible. Long term debt sucks.

I'm excited for you. I think this could be a really excellent thing.

OMG DO IT. Then go to all the parties, make shitloads of new friends who are years younger than you and have a badass time for 3-4yrs. You'd be like me right now haha.

I can't tell you what to study though, you have to pick something you like, but has career opportunities afterwards that you could see yourself doing for long term. You can change it up once you start, though. But don't let your field determine which parties you go to - go to them all :P

I went back to school at 35, and don't regret it for a second! Having been out for 17 years, I was worried about it just like you are but it was a snap. I found the instructors seemed to take a bit more time with the "older" folks, knowing as Ruby said that we were a bit more focused and took it more seriously than the ones straight out of high school.

Like the others have said, no idea on the study area but be sure it's something you like. Even if it's basket weaving lol. It took me that long to figure out what I wanted, and that the restaurant business wasn't going to do it for me any more.

Gosu's comment about going to uni to make friends years young than you reminds me of a friend I used to have. He did about 3 degrees and with each one seems to trade his friends in for younger ones. He's nearly 40 now so it's probably getting creepy.

Not that you'd be like that, jet. I think it is a great way to broaden you'd horizons and meet new people and extend your job opportunities. You've really got nothing to lose. Good luck choosing something

Well, what I meant was that most people at uni are younger than people mine and Jet's age - which plays to her need to get new friends who aren't settling down and being boring.

I'm going back to uni (depending on how the interview goes), to do a masters in multimedia journalism, and I'm 27.

And I cannot wait. Bring me the freshers!!

I went back to high school at the age of 21. It's an evening school for adults, but there are plenty of younger people there. It's worked out fine. And, I will be going to university at the age of 23-25. Age doesn't really matter once you get older.

    Uni

I was worried about going to college after the military, because I haven’t really studied anything since high school. 12 years out of high school. I’ve completed my first semester with A's and B's. The younger kids compete with me because I'm doing better than some of them. Maybe its because of the life experiences that I have been through. I hated high school, but now I’m doing a lot better with the studies now that im older. Age really doesn’t matter. This summer I am taking courses and I’m ready for Fall courses.
