Hi all, got a question for the americans amongst you. Im over in England and doing research for university. My question is about soccer in the US. Over here it is of course massive, and i know most people over here are of the opinion that soccer in america plays second to ur main sports like basketball, baseball, american football, etc.

How much is this the case? Is it a myth when people say americans know nothing about soccer and have no interest in it? Like i say over here it is a massive thing, and the majority of people take at least a passing interest. As well as full on 11-a-side, We also have, organised 5-a-side leagues over here. Where players of any abilities can play against others in a competitive nature but also for fun, fitness or whatever. For example people might play with a few colleagues in a 5-a-side team in a league once a week. Is there anything over in America like that? is it popular? I play soccer wuite a bit, and play for a team every weekend, and most people i know that play soccer will also play in 5-a-side during the week as well. Is it the same over there?

thanks for any help u can give me on this.

There are no real organized leagues... there are leagues at most colleges for students to screw around with which are 9 on 9, but finding active adult soccer leagues, 11 on 11 or otherwise is pretty rare I'd say.

Saying soccer plays 2nd is kinda inaccurate... Id say it plays more like 12th. There are lots of leagues for little kids, and high schools have soccer teams, but there are no real "futbol clubs" like you crazy asses have over there, so once most kids get to high school theyd rather play baseball, basketball, football, or something else.

I thought pretty much every little kid in the US played soccer? besides me, I played softball. but my bro was into soccer for a few years.
'Cause I'm that fool that broke the key- I'm unlockable so don't check me- I got weight on my shoulders and things on my mind- The sky is falling and I'm falling behind... No shame in my game just par for the path- I try to hone my craft because at hand's the task- But I find I'm not playing with a full deck- I'm up to my neck like Toulouse Lautrec

It's hard to categorize countries. Many people love soccer over here. Is it as strong as other countries? No, sure , some people are ignorant about it. But there is a pretty wide spectrum of people in this country.
I would say there are tons of soccer loving people. However, it is more diverse and "less" popular than in other countries.

I fucking WISH 5-a-side was popular here.

The only real organized leagues are 11 on 11, I haven't seen any 5-A-Sides at all. Pickup soccer is sorta popular here, but most people just play basketball instead.

It's sad. I'm moving to Europe.

I'd say it depends on where you are.
Apparently soccer is a big thing for little kids in the suburbs. Funny thing is my old high school's soccer team had a way better winning streak than our football team or any of the other teams as a matter of fact.

At my uni we've got an intramural soccer i think or maybe its a soccer club..?

I also wish soccer was a big thing here.

I actually wanted to go to Brazil, for a few weeks just to play soccer

But back to your question, im from Europe too.. Nothing compares for the love of futbol, like europe, especially England. I played College Futbol here for 3 years, very competitive, but down right dangerous. Two of my own friends both tore ACL's, thankfully I always watched myself.. There really is no pick up soccer games in my city, but im sure there is in bigger cities, like NYC, or LA.

cheers people for the replies so far, very useful. Just wondering what u mean by 'pick-up soccer'? U just mean 5-a-side?

So on the whole would u guys say there is demand for 5 on 5 soccer? and also by the way could u tell me where ur from? is it bigger in some states, areas, etc than others?

    thanks
