    Wireless woes

    So,

We have 5 laptops in our house, all using the same wireless router. Before I got here, the girls left the network unsecured because they weren't sure how to set security etc... So I can in and put a password on the network and all that jazz.

Well, since I did that, the router has started showing up multiple versions of our network. So now instead of just 'Thomson', we've also got 'Thomson 2m Thomson 2 3, Thomson 2 3 4 and Thomson 2 3 4 5'. Now on top of that, the network also decides to simply forget all of the security I put on the network. SO I put the password on and change the network name and when I wake up in the morning it's back to factory-default settings with default name and no security.

Is it possible this is the work of some mysterious third-party? I changed the admin password for router access and that's also reverted back to factory default.

I haven't bothered doing IP/MAC filtering yet because I'm not sure if the problem is with the router or if it's some wanker trying to steal my internet.

If nobody knows how to sort this out do you know anywhere I might be able to find out?
The broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying. These people know only too well how to use falsehood for the basest purposes... Adolf Hitler

When I was setting up my router and security, I used a google search and resulting online forums to get advice setting it up. Usually those places will have step by step instructions, and, sadly, more knowledgeable people than tech support often does.

What kind of router are you using? I'd suggest just typing that info into a google search (serial number or model number), along with a few key phrases from the issue you're having. You should get a few forum results with people posting a similar issue, and hopefully some answers from people online.

Have your friends/roommates been attempting to address the issue? I doubt this is the cause, but that could be a reason why multiple networks are showing up. Especially if they're trying to use a similar network name.

Also, if Thompson's your last name, or someone's last name in your house, I'd advise against using that as the network name. Might be better to make it something less personal, especially if you think someone might be tampering with it.

Restore your router to factor defaults, set it up from scratch, wipe your wireless connections on your comp and set them up again. If you're still seeing multiple routers with slightly different names, someone might be messing with you. Try unplugging the power to the router and scan for devices and see if you get anything.

    Thanks for the replies guys!

The network was working fine before I got here, but there was no security. So because I know a fair bit about computers I set up the security yadda yadda yadda and that's when the problems started. So I thought it might be someone else in the block of flats we live stealing our internet with his superior geek skills.

Well, after tearing my hair out, resetting to factory default, and googling stuff for hours on end I finally got to the bottom of the problem, and wouldn't you know it, the problem is all down to....

    WINDOWS VISTA!!!!

Yay! So apparently, my password has to be all numbers because when you have text passwords, Vista somehow manages to fuck up the router and it goes mental. So yeah, I did factory default and then used a numerical password and all is good once more.

    Thanks for your input!

Fuck you Vista! Fuck you Whale!
