    Netbooks

So I'm studying abroad next semester, and instead of bringing my laptop, I was thinking of getting a netbook. Cheaper so I won't have a heart attack if it's stolen, and tiny so I can carry it everywhere. Great qualities! All I'll really be using it for is the internet and writing papers, and a bit of video chatting. I have small hands so tiny keyboards don't bug me.

I was thinking about getting this one:Amazon.com: ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-VU1X-BK 10.1-Inch Black Netbook - 8.5 Hour Battery Life: Computer & Accessories

I would prefer not to have to spend more than $350 since my budget is tight. What do you guys think? Anyone have a better option? I don't mind going smaller in size, but going any bigger in size seems dumb to me.

I had gotten two of this model - Amazon.com: Lenovo IdeaPad S10e Netbook: Electronics - for my wife and daughter and although I find the little keypad a pain, they love it. It is small enough to fit in a large purse/carry all and light as a feather.

The one complaint they've had is that the limited screen resolution can be frustrating at times with sites that have a lot of material on their pages. Battery life doesn't seem to be that great either but naturally there are going to be some trade-offs.

Otherwise, sounds like a great idea for you.

have the Acer Aspire One, the white one. Got it at WallyWorld (WalMart) for 300. That's what I use mine for, traveling. It's light, I can email, edit my pics and IM.....about all I want to do while traveling. Except mine has XP.

Check it here. Walmart.com: Acer White 10.1" Aspire One D250-1604 Netbook PC with Intel Atom Processor & Windows 7 Starter: ComputersI

I have the 1005HA in blue w/ the N280 proc, I love it. I bought it end of august on newegg for like 370. My only complaint is the size of the bezel around the screen, it's big, but the size of the actual netbook is perfect. If you could wait a few months, do so, there should be a lot more configurations coming out and if you only need it for the spring semester, pick it up end of january.

So I got what I was thinking of in my OP. I couldn't wait until the end of January since I'm studying abroad and thus need to have everything really set up before I leave. I finally got to take it out of the box and fool around with it today.

    First impressions:
The size of the keyboard is pretty good. I can still touch type, with only a couple of small errors here and there due to spacing. I have small hands and fingers, though, so this might not work for people with larger hands, but personally I am adjusting well to the smaller keyboard. Keys feel solid.

The size of the screen is acceptable, I think I just have to get used to it. I've made all my toolbars and such as small as possible to leave more space, but it still feels tiny. The screen could have easily been made a bit longer, I think. Ah well. Could be worse.

Battery power is so far ridiculously great. Right now it's at 62% and 4 hours remaining. One thing I would like to note is that the battery meter is not reliable, at all. A few minutes ago I checked when it was at 65% and it told me I had 5.5 hours. So I've just been averaging things out, but it's annoying. I'll have to see if there's a way to fix that, probably not.

Speakers are tinny, to be expected. Have not yet tried the integrated webcam.

    Where are you studying?
The broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying. These people know only too well how to use falsehood for the basest purposes... Adolf Hitler

I'm a history major, and I'll be in London. I'm ridiculously excited since so far I can't remember ever being off the east coast of the US except for a two day trip to Canada earlier this year, and IMO Canada doesn't count as 'abroad.' So yeah. Can't wait!!

I just installed ubuntu netbook remix on a lenovo S10, blows windows 7 starter out of the water. I would seriously recommend trying out ubuntu if you're on a netbook.
