More and more kids are spending their time in front of a computer or television playing video games. The video game market made more money than the movie industry last year. There doesn’t seem to be any sign of it slowing down. Next generation platform systems will continue to come out and the industry will continue to grow. Clearly, the video gaming industry is having an impact on the lives of children, but is it a positive or negative impact?

Let’s consider some of the negative impacts of video games. Children are spending more and more hours indoors playing video games than ever before. Consequently, these children have trouble developing socially. In some cases, there are people who have shut themselves off from the outside world and decided to indulge themselves with video games. These people are living in a fantasy world. Video games take over their lives and they lose perspective of what’s important. Admittedly, this is an extreme case. However, it exemplifies the effect video games can have on a person who may be unstable. For those who are more stable, they may lose that sense of stability in their life because they are pulled in by video games. The term “video game addiction” is very common nowadays. A common name for the game “Everquest” is “Evercrack”, because the game is very addictive. People spend tons of their own money to feed their gaming addictions. In April of 2002 Shawn Wooley quit his job and spent weeks in his apartment playing Everquest. Eventually he was evicted, because he couldn’t afford to pay his rent due to his addiction. Sadly, Shawn eventually took his own life, but up to that point he continued to play Everquest relentlessly. Now, clearly this was a disturbed individual. His addiction to video games was essentially an escape from a reality (his life) that he could not deal with. There are so many troubled teens out there that could easily turn to video games as an escape rather than deal with their problems in a healthy manner.

We also need to question the benefits of video games? How does playing video games in front of a television, hours on end, help a child develop as a person? Some teens spend an entire day playing video games when they could be developing their skills in sports, volunteering or even working. Video games can consume so much of a person’s time that they begin to hinder a child’s growth.

Some argue that video games are good, because they allow children to get their aggression out. However, aren’t there much more health ways of doing that? Rather than blowing up pixilated people isn’t healthier to sit down with someone and discuss your problems? Playing video games to help you with your anger or other problems is merely a quick fix/band-aid that will never help in the long run.

Clearly, video games have a negative impact on our children.

video games are better than just watching television......doing absolutely nothing. at least video games involve you, sometimes make your heart race, and increase hand-eye coordination. it's been proven that playing video games increase a surgeon's dexterity. they can also provide social interaction. when i was a kid i used to use video games to make friends. "wanna come over and play some super mario 3??" hell, sometimes i still make friends that way. in short...games are fun and you can blow me.

People claim video games were beneficial? In some cases they may be considered detrimental, but watch your generalizations. It seems to me that you are playing off of some stereotypes to produce a rather subjective argument.

Nice try, but I'm not buying it. Video games are a fun activity that can lead to poor choices, such as poor time management, but those are attributed to individual decisions more than they are to video games.

This being your first post, I'd invite you to introduce yourself. Now that you started, might as well use it to get posting.

Video games give you everything you ever wanted - be that violence, sex, the thrill of murder or a mix of all three without being slapped in a face with a law suit.

Why do you think kids shut themselves off from the outside world? They do that because they finally realize that the world is cold and uncaring.. careless like the skies that do nothing but hang there while you're in agony, bleeding dry.

Fuck, if the kids didn't have the games don't you think they would turn to alcohol and drugs to escape this world (like the rest of them do)? Do you actually belive that someone will "sit down and sort out his problems" like you said? No boy will ever "sit down to talk and sort out his problems".. You know why? It's simple - he was raised to be a soldier since birth.. society's "Boy Code".

Those that can't control their impulses and addictions would have found something else to be obsessed over.. let's see.. drug addicts, alcholics, gamblers, adrenaline junkies and workaholics... ever noticed that there are people who sit on these boards 24/7? I found my addiction in bbing- now I'm a freaking gym rat who spends 90% of my time cooking, eating and working out... what about porn addicts?.. still don't see the pattern?

Video games are awesome - for a short period of time you are free from life's burdens, worries, fears and pains.. You are reborn into a new world.. sometimes so real and perfect that you can't help but shut up and gaze.. You know what I'm talking about - some people read books, newspapers, TV or even indulge in food to get their escape ticket.. others play games and poker.. it's just another outlet so to speak .. Video games let you visit your own personal paradise with the only intention of giving you enough strength to suck it up and overcome the tomorrow's challenges.

I love video game and play them probably once every other day some times everyday.
Video games are great fun when used at moderation.
You always need moderation for everything though. If you do it to much you become anti-social, its true.
Video games are still great you just cant obbsess over them

hey bud , this isn't fight club or any stretch

cut the shit , work and the outside world are part of life , and you won't always be able to play video games and you wont always be comforted , grow the fuck up

    emo kids piss me off...

Dude , grow up , video games will not always be there to comfort you , and the world is cold , so get used to it

Addiction itself is a choice when started , and i dont think if you took away my brothers video games he'd do a line of coke instead...

I'm not saying that you will always be able to play videogames and get comforted.. nor did I say that work and outside world weren't a part of life.. where do you get that stuff?
I'm not emo, wtf is with the labeling? Unless I'm really that bad at expressing myself, you should learn how to read.

The world IS cold, you said it, and there always will be something that shall be used to escape it even if it's only for a moment.. be that games, drugs, racing, alcohol or gratuitous sex. I wasn't even talking about all of the kids that play video games, I was talking about the ones that can't control themselves.

If you took away your brother's games he would find something else to get his fix.. that doesn't mean that he will turn to hardcore drugs.

    Just to add:

    1. Don't call me a kid when you are younger than me.
    2. Don't call me emo when you are the poetry fucker here.

The "Emo" comment was because you have this same sceptic bullshit attitude about life , this idealism you have is annoying

The way the world is vs the way the world should be

i'm saying that video games arent an escape , b/c after you put down that controller you are back to where you were , why not just actually confront your problems in life?

And i could give a fuck less how old you are , don't condescend me , especially if you come to the subject with an immature attitude

AND you are the one with the bullshit suicide emo lyrics in your signature

i like romantic poetry , not fucking poe , so dont start this shit

I didn't say it was a permanent escape. It's pretty obvious that you can't play games forever. Just because it's temporal does not mean it's not an escape.

As for the lyrics, the last time I checked, Cradle of Filth was not being even close to Emo.. if anything it would be leaning towards black metal (although not quite the same as good old Venom or Rotting Christ ).. especially in the albums like "Midian" and "Dusk and Her Embrace".

    P.S. Peace anyway

I personally use video games as an escape sometimes.....

You might say that is bad, but look at the alternatives:

    Drinking
    Drugs
    Cutting
    Etc....

They do serve a purpose to some people and you are generalizing with your article....
