Why Hurricanes pose more of a threat than they did 30 years ago?
Hurricanes now pose more of a threat then they did 30 years ago because the areas where they hit, 30 years ago, are much more populated. And from this massive population influx, builders and residents are not taking proper pre-cautionary measures to avoid devastating situation. So mainly to fault for the now devastating effects of most Hurricanes is by citizens and builders.
Many people today flock to the diaster-prone areas in the illusion of increasing their overall quality-of-life; ironically. These areas in the United States include Florida, Texas and California; and now obviously Louisana. These beautiful yet extremely dangerous areas face the dangers of numerous Hurricane Activity.
Hurricane Camille in 1969 struck the Gulf Coast; and she was one of the worst Hurricanes in United States history. Hurricane Camille had a twenty two foot storm surge, close to Katrina's size. If Hurricane Camille were to hit us today, the damages would be close to 4-5 times as worse than it was in 1969. Hurricane Camille isn't even in the top 10 mostly costly storms and it was the most intense to ever hit the United State's mainland, how is this possible? Because, the population levels were Camille hit in 1969 do not compare to the coastal populations today.
The proper pre-cautionary measures to protect citizens against Hurricane damages are to make building codes more stringent where Hurricanes likelihood. But citizens of these diaster zones are not willing to pay the extra costs to protect their homes from Hurricanes of a long magnitude. "Hurricane Amensia" is when people that live in these disaster zones see that damages all over the world are occuring and have the mentality of "It won't happen to me" so they fail to take these pre-cautionary measures.
Hurricane forcasting is a great improved ability to evacuate the large numbers of residents now living in the most dangerous areas. In addition, anaylsts say officials are becoming highly skilled at responding to large-scale hurricane-related disaster. This happened with Katrina, the warnings were sent, but some people suffered from "Hurricane Amnesia" and decided just not to leave their homes. Some of these reasons are admirable, and some are just ignorance.
