Humans have become a parasite, living off the earth while slowly killing everything that has managed to peacefully live on it for the past... oh.. say... 10 million years or so? Animals don't pollute. We do. Animals don't create garbage. We do. Yes, there are some amazing things humans have made, but really now... we say, "Oh, we're so good and kind, we've saved a thousand square miles of forest land, we've opened up a new elephant reservation"...or whatever, pretending that we're fixing the problem as if we weren't its cause.

Technology is all very fine and good, provided it doesn't leave the earth much worse then when it found it. You can forgive a few mistakes here and there, and of course you need to cut down a FEW trees for paper and space and whatnot... but when it gets to the point that in some places the air is actually BROWN with smog, and it gets to the point that entire ecosystems are threatened and the entire food chain is on danger of falling apart...

Well that is just not acceptable. Mother Earth can handle losing a few small forests, but not a few LARGE ones. She can handle a bit of pollution, but not a huge gaping hole in the ozone. She can handle a few endangered species here and there, a few 'accidents'.... because then they are so small, she can recover. But we have made so many mistakes, and eliminated so much life, and ruined so much land, so much forest, so many ponds and rivers contaminated with human waste... in such a small period of time... she will never recover completely. It's been too much too fast, with not nearly enough done to try and help her recover.

And lo! What are any of the big polluting countries doing about it? Nothing. What are the people with the POWER to help the environment significantly doing about it? NOTHING.

And people try to say, that it isn't that bad. That next month...next year...maybe, a few years from now... when we have the time...when we have the money... when it really starts getting 'serious', we'll do something. And they're blind to the fact that it IS already serious. By the time THEY decide to do something, it'll be far too late.

I'd bet quite a lot that my grandchildren or my great-grandchildren will be there to watch mankind finally fall. And perhaps, a few of them will survive, and learn something from all this. Perhaps they will be able to heal the earth and once more live in harmony with whatever creatures manage to survive.

Then again, maybe not.... maybe nobody will survive.

But I'm sure you'll agree, it's much more depressing to think that while we might survive, we'll do the same mistakes over and over again...

Poor, poor earth... we never gave her a chance.

    [/rant]

This is only my opinion... yes, I know that rather than sitting here typing this, I could be out there doing something to help... and I know that other people are helping... but is it really enough?

Bush is the president of the top world power, one of the worst wasters and polluters in the world. If anybody has real potential to fix things, it's him. But has he done anything? No, in fact, he's made it even harder for the organizations that do.

Until our leaders really get together and decide to do something, we're basically screwed.

actually the end of your article there was the only real issue.

    <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
Until our leaders really get together and decide to do something, we&#39;re basically screwed.[/b]
to quote Carlin: The Planet is fine, the PEOPLE are fucked.

the planet was here long before us, and will be here long after we&#39;re gone, and it&#39;ll be fine. We will disappear, not the planet, not until our galaxy goes nova (our sun being too small will collapse into a white dwarf).

So saying something like "We never the Earth a chance" is silly, we&#39;re a mere blip on the Earth&#39;s timetable a nothinginess to be discarded like a dog scratching a flea. The planet doesn&#39;t give a rat&#39;s ass about us.

Not that I am advocating destroying ourselves through pollution and destruction of the our environment. I think we should make every effort to do what is right concerning our abilities to remain a viable species in part of the biomass on this planet, I just don&#39;t presume that the ending of the human species is the "end of the world" just the end of our world.

A topic near and dear to my heart Tia.

And on many points I do agree. Our biggest problem with the earth is that we use it without really caring for it. In our quest for more, we don&#39;t stop and realize what this more may cost us.

As for the global warming Ironman, green house gases and the depletion of the ozone layer is not a myth generated by liberal tree hugging hippies. The Kyoto Accord wasn&#39;t written up because some scientists and politicians decided that it was a fun and new thing to try. It was written up because of the way that we are misusing and abusing our home planet.

And as long as you want 70 degree weather all year around I suggest you get used to massive amounts of insects. And I hope you don&#39;t like apples or pears and many other types of fruit... being that they require a certain number days of chilly temperatures to bear fruit.

Not to mention those roses and lilies you may or may not enjoy - without the chill of winter they will never develop the deep color or scent.

And of course if you enjoy any seafood I&#39;d rethink the 70 degree year around climate as well, simply because with that amount of temperature increase most of the cold water marine life will not survive.

Nature is a delicate balance of elements. Granted the earth is very resilient but we as humans are making it harder and harder for ecosystems to recover.

It&#39;s simple - we do need to take care of the earth. It is our responsibility. We are acting like kids who don&#39;t care about their rooms or their possessions. That attitude is biting us in the butt now. And it will continue to do so until we stand up and take care of what we must.

For an interesting read I suggest going to Shifting Baselines. It provides a good backround on what we have come to accept as normal and what normal really is.

Global Warming will happen and is happening, you are right ruby, it is not a myth. We just had temperatures of 40 - 42 degrees C (~110 F) here in Brisbane, and that was a very rare occurrence, even for the end of summer. The environment is becoming a passion of mine, and is part of the reason I am now doing Environmental Science as a comajor. I am hoping to do something positive in my career as a chemist in that area.

The decline of the Earth will not be rapid, it will still take a long time. I actually believe that by then, we will have the ability to live elsewhere in the solar system/galaxy, displacing the Earth as our only home. However, that is no reason to not look after what we have now.

Just wondering what you guys think is the number one problem? What is the most dangerous? I think the number one thing is industrial processes releasing gases, but the internal combustion engine we encounter every day also does some harm. It needs a substitute in the future.

global warming is definitely occuring. no doubt about it. there&#39;s evidence that the ozone layer naturally fluctuates. remember the ice ages? so i say that global warming would occur anyways, naturally. however....not to the extent that it will be happening, due to greenhouse gasses.

i am hugely concerned about pollution. but, i don&#39;t believe it&#39;s our biggest problem.

our biggest problem right now is overpopulation. NOTHING is being done for prevention (with the exception of china). we&#39;re just gonna follow our same old motto of &#39;fix it when it&#39;s a problem&#39;. but how the FUCK do you correct the problem of overpopulation? any solution that is not prevention will be BAD. but it&#39;s likely that we won&#39;t have to worry about that....mother nature has a way of showing us who&#39;s boss. as we clearcut out way into the rainforest, we&#39;ll discover the next Spanish Flu. think it was bad back then? people back in those days couldn&#39;t travel the world in a matter of hours. back then, there was no such thing as international airports. places where one infected person could spread the plague all over the world in a matter of days.

so anyways......bad shit will happen. anyone who thinks otherwise needs to WAKE THE FUCK UP.

I think the most dangerous is global warming. becuase if you want to get rid of global warming, you must lessen the amount of pollution in general, which will solve a lot of other problems we have, like smog issues and of course, the hole in the ozone, and (duh) global warming.

Maybe you haven&#39;t noticed Genix, but something is being done. Fertility rates among men have been dropping at an alarming rate. Our growth rate is dwindling. People aren&#39;t having 6-7 kids any more, they&#39;re having 1 or 2 or none. Also, as the world&#39;s population grows, so do farming technologies. We&#39;re not going to run out of food or room any time in the near future, and by the time that becomes a foreseeable problem, with current growth rate trends, we&#39;ll be in a population decline.

I fail to see the jingoism in that post.

Jingoism: Extreme nationalism characterized especially by a belligerent foreign policy; chauvinistic patriotism.

To put it more succinctly, jingoism is the idea "my country, right or wrong"

He just feels very strongly that conspiracy theorists are morons.

the point is that we are overpopulated, NOW. we NEED a decline in population. not a decline in the growth rate. well we might as well chop down the rest of the rainforest to make room, huh? we have taken up enough fucking room. far more than our share as a species.

Ok..Slight problem here. Its all very well and good bitching to imaginary people on the internet...But looking at people in General..We have no potential world leaders here, and as such your ranting is pointless. Find a place where this kind of thign has an effect, like the News, or in public. Or better yet, write a letter to your governemtn and tell them your startling news, Im sure they&#39;ll rush to follow all your suggestions...

Now don&#39;t get me wrong, Im as worried about the state of the planet as the next guy....But internet rants are not the best place to vent your energies.

    Here endeth the Lesson

but you never know who is reading on the internet. with that logic, the internet is meaningless. it helps nobody. therefore, nobody should ever bother saying anytihng on the internet becuase nobody cares.

    WHAT?

the point is that we are overpopulated, NOW. we NEED a decline in population. not a decline in the growth rate. well we might as well chop down the rest of the rainforest to make room, huh? we have taken up enough fucking room. far more than our share as a species. [/b]
Well, you&#39;re right bro. We should all shoot ourselves to conserve space on the planet. You go first, the rest of us will be right behind you
