someone finally agrees, peace is unobtainable...
At any given time there are more than 20 wars in progress, most of them never make the mainstream media due to them being in small countries that generally don't make a blip on the world news radar.
All wars are political in nature, they are all concerned with one faction wanting what the other faction has, and finding a justification for attacking and claiming their 'prize'. Of course sometimes the attacking faction doesn't bother to justify their actions, they just attack and do their best to make sure that there are no survivors that can give a different account of what happened.
We have all just seen war, one that has been justified by world media focussing on the atrocities committed by the ruling party, and the need to remove that country's leader so that the people can have a "fair and democratic" leadership. Of course if an agreement hadn't been entered into with this madman at the end of the first gulf war, then this most recent war wouldn't have been needed.
The same argument can be used about WWII. When Hitler first came to power in Germany he did incredible things with the economy. So good in fact that other world leaders visited and came away full of praises for the economy of the country. When Hitler started his "ethnic cleansing" of the Jews it was quite commonly known about. I'm pretty sure that the Australian prime minister at the time even said that sometimes the hard decisions had to be made. Therefore people claiming that they didn't know about what was going on is obviously bullshit. But Hitler was left alone until he started invading other countries. WWI and WWII are today inconceivable, what took years back then now takes weeks. Weapons and technology having come so far that war is almost like an extended football game.
But why?
Why do people feel the need to behave like this, why do people feel that they have the right to take - by force if necessary - what another country has. Again I am seeing suicide bombings in Israel and Morocco. Do these achieve anything except more dead?
The word 'terrorist' is bandied about in almost every newscast, but what is the definition of a terrorist? I think most people have different ideas, one person's definition or terrorist is another person's definition of freedom fighter. I was watching a news item last night where the man talking said that as far as he is concerned a terrorist is someone who deliberately targets civilians. I agree with that theory. Why are we seeing such an increase in terrorism then?
A lot of it seems to stem from religious differences. Which is one reason why I am an atheist, I do not want to be part of a system of belief that condones killing. I do think that there is a place for religion in this world, but to use it as an excuse for terror attacks, or for full scale war is abhorrent.
I do not believe that there will ever be "world peace". It's a nice little idea but is a dream that will never be realized. Those who would be able to engineer this type of peace have no inclination to do so. The most cynical among us claim that one of the biggest reason for the attack on Iraq was the American economy being in the toilet, and usually after a war there is an economic upturn. In a world where power is an aphrodisiac why would any leader want to give that up? I firmly believe that the most we can ever hope to achieve is a reduction of conflict.
Although I concede that I believe that world peace in unattainable, I will not stop protesting or being an activist. I am still - and will continue to be - a member of Amnesty International. I will continue to speak out when I believe people are being treated unfairly and unjustly. But I will admit to being disillusioned, cynical, and embracing anarchy.

World Peace is some bull some delusional person came up with.
There never will be a Utopia on this planet. Why? Because we have a bunch of psychopathic morons as our leaders.
I’m in AI too, and some other environmental/global thing. I’ll keep on protesting our corrupt government till we get someone who will not do all the idiotic and useless things Bush and some presidents before him did. But that’s not likely.
I think that you guys are just a bit pessimistic if you think world peace isn't attainable. I mean, I agree that peace is down shit creek at this moment in time but there will be peace, maybe not in our generation or in 20 more generations but it will happen eventually. That's the plus side of globalization, I guess.
Just my $0.02
but don't you see? there will never be complete peace because every human being at one point or another has felt jealousy and/or fear, and when you put those two together, you have the makings of a war, however small and 'insignifigant'. Take away jealousy and there would be no economy (no one would want to buyt anything) take away fear and the world would be a boreing place. but i mean, not as though you'd be ABLE to take them away.....
Derek- hey. you stole my water supply for the drought.
Francis- No I didn't.
Derek- until you give it back, I'm gonna kill all of your cows.
Francis- yeah, well for each cow you kill, that'll be a family member of yours that I will kill.
Derek- you lay a finger on my family and I'll report you to the government!
Francis- you do that and i'll get my family to kill you in your sleep!
Derek(thinking)- h'mmm better kill him before he kills me...
Francis(thinking)- h'mmm better kill him before he kills me...
of course this happens much slower, but you get my drift. Get someone jealous, throw in a little fear, sprinkle with some suspicion, and bake with pride. Viola! Your very own, ready-to-eat WAR.
I was really referring to the macro view of peace, you know the larger picture of no bloody wars, ethnic cleansing...etc
Of course there is going to be bickering between two human beings and, although it was just an example, I can't imagine anything like that happening cause we have these things called "laws" and you can't just threaten to kill another person's entire family. Thats why we have courts to settle those disputes about who owns what...etc and I don't really think you can call that a "war".
As long as humanity remains free, in the way that we are now, there will never be world peace. It is against human nature to not fight with each other. Its a nice idea though
Too many people on the planet for peace. Althought peace is just an illusion. Think of it this way, it there was only 2 people left on the planet, they'd probably be fighting to see who could own more. lol... human nature.
There will never be peace on this planet because there are just too many fuckin' people. With 6 billion+ people all wanting different things how can anyone expect everyone to agree on how things should be? All's it takes is one asshole with a different plan to disrupt everything.
Well never get peace ever, inless everyone becomes like boring oppinionless compassionate drones.
I don't think the number of people has anything to do with it. 1000s of years ago when the earth's population was significantly less, Rome was trying to take over the world. Look at any era in history and you're spoilt for choice about wars you can study.Originally posted by «ÇhäötïǤLüñätïÇ»@Sep 3 2003, 03:29 AM

we'll never have peace because human bature is built around expansion conquest and strife.
i think the only way to stop war is to kill everyone and/or make hamsters rule the world
bingo - too many people to agree, even if it comes down to agreeing on peace. too many people are just crazy. they can't get enough of being martyrs and disrupting everything and ruining lives at will. like you said, all it takes is a couple people. that's where the bullshit in the world is.Originally posted by boxer_dude@Sep 6 2003, 12:25 PM

however, i don't like pessimists. how does that help? even the great Voltaire, a critic of all things established, was able to criticise those who criticise everything without end - it is easy to point out flaws and complain about them, just as it is easy to complain about the current state of affairs or human nature. so why don't we focus on what's going on today, and what we can realisticially do to help the world?
a few examples come to mind -
- the war on terror --> not going so well as it stands, but everyone needs to stop complaining and band together on this one. this is where it is revealed that politics are bullshit - everyone has to act a certain way in order to get the approval of someone else, whether it's a presidential candidates looking for the vote or the high school protestor looking for easy approval and coolness from his/her friends.
- the environment --> yes, there's a problem. globalization is taking its toll. but so is the unbelieveable and unstoppable population of eastern countries. let's not blame everything on large corporations - they sustain many countries and take little in return. instead, let's try to pass stricter emissions restrictions, etc.
in the end, it's rarely that the critics, pessimists and rebels (for the sake of being rebels) that help the world. they feel fulfilled themselves, but have done little for anyone else. anyone can point out a flaw. it takes a real person to fix out. at least that's the way I see it.
World peace is a human ideal. It can't happen unless everyone agrees about everything. The truth is all humans have a hunger for violence, and selfish wants such as land or money. And to further one's self, you must defeat your competitors... which is exactly why we have wars.
Also, religious beliefs conflict, which pisses people.. so it basically comes down to: if your country doesn't have the same faith as ours, your our enemy. This just pisses me off! Why can't people except everyone for who they are!!!??
World peace can't happen in our time. I doubt it will ever happen.![]()
